The fourth annual UNIFICATION is New York's largest annual demonstration for peace in South Asia. Highlighting the talent of the South Asian American community, we celebrate the region's first major victories in the anti-colonial movement and stand in solidarity for peace in the region.

South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT) is a national, nonpartisan, non-profit organization that elevates the voices and perspectives of South Asian individuals and organizations to build a more just and inclusive society in the United States. SAALT is the only national, staffed South Asian organization that advocates around issues affecting South Asian communities through a social justice framework. SAALT's strategies include conducting public policy analysis and advocacy; building partnerships with South Asian organizations and allies; mobilizing communities to take action; and developing leadership for social change. ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
D'Lo D'Lo is a queer Tamil Sri L.A.nkan-American, political theatre artist/writer, director, comedian and music producer. D'Lo has performed and/or facilitated performance and writing workshops extensively (US, Canada, UK, Germany, Sri Lanka and India). D'Lo is also the creator of the "Coming Out, Coming Home" writing workshop series which have taken place with South Asian and/or Immigrant Queer Organizations nationally (LA, NY and SF). This year, D'Lo is internationally touring (SF, NY, Manchester, UK and 6-city tour in India), and is currently performing his full-length stand-up storytelling show D'FunQT (pr. defunct) running weekends through July at Dixon Place. He is also in workshop production for his 2nd full length play Boys that Pray (dir. Laurie Woolery) which received funding from the Astraea Foundation.D'Lo holds a BA from UCLA in Ethnomusicology and is a graduate of New York's School of Audio Engineering (SAE).
Arooj Aftab Named one of NPR's Top 100 Composers under 40, Arooj Aftab innovates off classical Pakistani, Sufi & pre-partition South Asian music, creating original compositions for a sound that is fresh, graceful, and musically complex. Paying homage to classical sufi legends such as Abida Parveen and Reshma; neo-soul and jazz icons such as Sade and Ella Fitzgerald; and contemporary world musicians such as Marisa Monte and Fat Freddy's Drop, Arooj presents an original, interactive sound embraced by young and old, South Asian and beyond.Originally from Lahore, Pakistan, Arooj moved to the U.S. in 2005 to study Music Production and Engineering at Berklee College of Music. Arooj will soon be releasing her debut album as part of Rebuild Pakistan, an initiative she created to promote a vision of peace and healing for Pakistan, inspiring a global community to rebuild perspective on Pakistan, and urging the people of Pakistan to actively engage in rebuilding their homeland.
Deen A first-generation South Asian American playwright and performer, Deen is a member of the Public Theater's Emerging Writers Group. His first full-length play, Shut-Up!, won him the Dennis Johnston Playwriting Prize and the James Baldwin Award. He self-produced his next play, Where Children Play: the Story of Tank and Horse, at the Berkshire Fringe Festival to rave audience reviews. His latest play, Draw the Circle, had it's World Premiere at InterAct Theatre in Philadelphia in April 2012 and is headed to Chicago in December. He received his MFA at the Actors Studio Drama School/New School of Drama. His short plays have appeared at numerous off-off Broadway theaters around NYC. His is currently work on a play about the Sikh massacres in India in 1984.
Parijat Desai strives to create an organic and kinetic blend of Indian classical and Western contemporary dance. She has devoted her life to training in these radically different movement systems, and to finding bridges between them. Desai has taught dance at venues such as Institute for Diversity in the Arts/Stanford University, UCLA, Queens College, Mark Morris Dance Center, Peridance Capezio Center, DanceWave/Brooklyn, and Brooklyn Friends Academy. Desai has been a recipient of a Lower Manhattan Cultural Council grant, Asian American Arts Alliance SOAR grant, Durfee Foundation Artist Fellowship, and Lester Horton Dance Award for Individual Performance. She has been commissioned to collaborate with legendary Taiko composer Kenny Endo, and choreographed for Migritude by poet Shailja Patel, commissioned by the National Performance Network. Through performance, Desai has helped raise funds for immigrant services, earthquake relief, and victims of communal violence.
Sham-e-Ali Nayeem A Philadelphia based poet who was born in Hyderabad, India and raised in both the UK and the US. Her work has appeared in publications and anthologies such as, Shattering the Stereotypes: Muslim Women Speak Out, Mizna Journal and Shout Out: Women of Color Respond to Violence. Sham-e-Ali has performed her poetry internationally including at the Oxford Literary Festival and with the "Sister Fire Cultural Arts Tour of Radical Women of Color Artists and Activists".
