Why I Walk a Mile for WEAVE

Why I Walk a Mile for WEAVE

Every May I join other WHA colleagues who slip on high heels and walk a mile to help end violence against women. The thousand-man Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event supports programs for WEAVE in Sacramento – Women Escaping a Violent Environment – and has changed how our entire region works collectively to build a community that does not tolerate domestic violence and sexual assault.

This year Walk a Mile takes place on Sunday, May 19 and starts in Crocker Park. You can sign up for the walk here, and/or donate to the cause to help WEAVE provide services to survivors. The event will include a large family zone, food trucks, live entertainment with the band The Ripoffs (whose lead singer is WHA’s Health and Wellness Manager Alicia Lowe!), cocktails and beer for those 21 years and older, vendors, and a ton of fun!

In addition to raising about $300,000 annually for WEAVE’s programs, the Walk a Mile event also spreads awareness of the organization and its mission. The thousand men who gather at Crocker Park have a lighthearted attitude about donning a pair of high heels, but they also are reminded that ending domestic violence in our community is a serious, critical issue.

As a board member for WEAVE, I have a personal connection to the event. But I am also proud to walk for a cause that I truly believe in so that more people are aware of the impact of domestic violence and sexual assault on our community, and so more victims can be helped by WEAVE’s programs.

Walk a Mile is just one of over 100 regional events, causes and community nonprofit organizations that WHA supports every year. Others include the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services, the Crocker Art Museum, the B Street Theatre, the Sacramento Heart and Stroke Walk, and many more.

The best businesses are committed to the neighborhoods where they live and work. They look for ways to increase their involvement with their community and show that they support its causes. I encourage every business to take an active role in its community.

What a great organization and great endeavor - and all those men walking a mile in high heels! I totally agree the more we get involved, spread the word and help others - the better off everyone will absolutely be!
