The game has 8 classes, four for each faction, and each of this classes evolve into different advance clases, such as Sith inquisitor can either be a Sith Assasin or a Sith Sorcerer.
There are four class stories for each faction, corresponding to each basic class, each voiced by notable vocal actors in the industry including David Hayter, Nolan North, Jennifer Hale among others.
The only content exclusive to each class, are the class quests, which are a lot, as you are on the way to complete them you will encounter sidequests, which are also shared by other classes, but what I like is the detail that even though the sidequests are the same, the dialogue change accordingly, so far I have a Sith Warrior and a Imperial agent, and I love how they refer to you as "My Lord" or "Agent" to each class accordingly, it adds a certain degree of inmersion.
It's clear that elements have been lifted liberally from World of Warcraft, but the narrative structure does much to hide any of the usual problems associated with MMOs. The need to grind has been expertly woven into the game's story so that character progression feels natural rather than forced. The game is great at making players constantly feel rewarded too, with powerful abilities granted at a regular, pleasant pace.
Player choices are mostly cosmetic, having no lasting impact on the world, but the sense of personality in these choices is rewarding in its own right, mainly limited to temporary results such on the Empire side convincing a group of rebels to surrender which leads to them being taken as prisioners and making a public announcement to the media that they were not aligned with the Republic and they acted without the consent of said faction, this is considered a light choice, or you have the choice, of engaging them and proceed to killing the rebels then report to your superiors that they were aligned to the Republic hence the superiors make to the public that the Republic broke the temporary peace treaty between the Republic and the Empire, making the Empire to kill anyone on the planet aligned with the Republic, this is the result of a dark choice. While this sidequest has no major impact on the continuity of the main campaign it's basically a turned page after you leave the planet.
A lot of people seems to believe because of the added cutscenes and voiced dialogues this is a single player game, which is wrong, the game makes an incentive for you to quest in group and play with group, including rewarding you with social points which as you rank up, you can purchase goods at certain shops with these points. All planets are full of these mini open world heroic areas which you requiere a group to complete them, tailored for different group size, some are labeled (Heroic +2) this means this area has been designed for two players, some are labeled (Heroic +4) stating that this area is designed for four players. The instances are tailored the same way, though only the first one is made for two players, it will be too easy if you group with four.
Bioware has done a good job at appealing both casual and hardcore players with the instance dificulties, as later on there are 3 types of dificulty modes, Normal Mode, Hard Mode, and Nightmare Mode, the rewards from the dificulty setting are scaled accordingly.
There is also a new system which it is great, the companion system, your companions are like pets, but slightly more advanced than most games, while not smart like a human, they are well programed enough to like auto disengage a mob that you have slept, stunned or paralized that are broken with damage with no need to command them, they aren't also a liability when it comes to worrying something might attack them, they even stealth with you when you use stealth skills. There are different companions with different roles to fit your class, tanks, healers and damage dealers, companions sometimes even participate on class quests and sidequests cutscenes, also expressing a like or dislike for your decision.
Companions are not only limited to combat, but they craft for you, gather resources, and go on missions, without the need to interrupt your adventures, which is a huge plus as sometimes crafting for hours on a static position can be a tedium.
At certain point of the game, you get your own Spaceship, which works on a similar fashion to Mass Effect's Normandy, it is the gathering point of your companions, it's your travel ship to different planets, you get contacted there by your superiors, and is also capable of space fights, your ship is upgradable with different pieces to increase performance.
Regarding space fights, on the Cockpit there's a console which you get daily quests, which engage you in space combat. The space combat works on a similar fashion to Star Fox games, it's a rail shooter prety much, very basic, but fun, you get rewarded with significant EXP and credits. However it has been stated by the developers that they are working on deep and significant changes to the system, I suppose it would be fun to expect something like Rogue Squadron games.
A lot of TOR's success will hinge on post-game content. With such a focus on narrative campaigns, the game sometimes you loose the perception that you are playing a MMO. When a class' campaign is over, BioWare's going to need to work extra hard to keep players around. While the current endgame is minimal I believe so far consists of 4 endgame flashpoints, two operations (raids) and the ability to revisit the lower level instances upscaled with increased dificulty for level 50 players, that being said, Bioware stated on twitter they have been working on new content ready for a soon release, including 2 new classes, one for each faction.
The universe is incredibly huge, the starter planets are somewhat small, but they are supposed to be introductory to your class for you to get the hang of your class of what advance class you want to play. Then the rest of the planets and incredibly huge, a lot of people that played the beta will say otherwise, however they made their judgement with a huge mistake, they just traveled to the planet opened the map, and saw a small/medium sized area, wrong, each planet has a large ammount of different maps that are not visible until you moved to that border and have explored, I explored a planet called Balmora and thought "This planet is so huge, I keep progressing and there's always a new area opening up" oh boy how was I wrong, when I reached Tattoine and Hoth, my jaw literally dropped with how incredibly large is the scale of the map, and amazing enough, with something to do almost everywhere.
I recommend this game to anyone starting a MMO for the first time, wanting a fresh change from a different MMO, loves the Star Wars universe, if you are tired of the usual fantasy setting with dragons and looking for sci-fi then you are in for a treat.
I however do not recommend this game, if you are hoping to rush trough content and don't care about story and lore skipping story/cutscenes to max level to start raiding you are in for a dissapointment as you will be skipping the highlight of the game, if you are veteral World of Warcraft player that is comming expecting for something new, this is not a game for you.
Star Wars: The Old Republic while it doesn't make a revolution of the genre, the game does well at what there already is, at this point like shooting games there's hardly anything to make a revolution of the genre. A lot of people will claim that "Guild Wars 2 is new and fresh and the revolution of the the genre" then I invite you to go to Youtube.com and search for Vindictus gameplay, you'll notice that a free to play already did in advance the type of gameplay that Guild Wars 2 is boasting about being new and fresh, this however does not mean it will be a terrible game and there is no room for improvement.
I won't give any scores, because I believe reviews should not be scored, because they give a false perception of the actual product to the costumer, however I will score it five stars to balance the World of Warcraft fanboys one star reviews which is pretty obvious they are close minded and selfish that think that no other game ever will be a success besides World of Warcraft, SWTOR might never reach a population of World of Warcraft, but it doesn't need to have 10,000,000 subscribers to be a success, keep in mind, that the popularity of World of Warcraft is also because you are able to play it on a toaster.
The best thing I can say about this game overall is the story. It is so amazing that every quest in this game (minus some side quests) is fully voice acted. AND THE VOICE ACTING IS GOOD! That alone is reason enough to pick up the game. I don't know how Bioware managed to wrangle up such good voice actors (especially the 8 class characters. They found the holy grail of voice acting jobs) but they did. You really can't understand how much of a difference this makes while playing a game if you haven't had to read giant mountains of quest text (cough wow). But the stories that these people weave demonstrate what Bioware is best at: delivering a compelling narrative. What I find the most facinating about the narrative is whether you play republic or empire, you can make light or dark choices. Like say, on my Sith Sorcerer I can chose to be a complete douche nozzle, or I can make decisions based on how I think my character would react. For an example: The origin of the Sith Inquisitor is that he/she is was a slave rising up on the ranks of the sith. On a mission to recover lost cargo stolen by slaves, i could have chosen to do the dark side dialogue choice and killed the slave who stole the cargo instantly, or I could sympathize with him because of our background and let him go, which counted as a light side choice. I made the second choice, knowing fully that I was going to get lightside points, but it didn't really matter to me. It was what I believed my character would do, and THAT is a compelling narrative. People have said that the questing is boring, and I disagree to an extent. It will only be boring if you don't get into the story you are in. I tried playing a jedi character, but it really got on my nerves quickly due to how goody goody they are. I switched to an inquisitor and had a heck of a lot more fun. Side quests are the same way. Some of them really get you engaged in story, and some of them are just tasks. There has to be some level of difference. If they just threw BIG EVENT BIG EVENT BIG EVENT then you would get tired of that too. I think Bioware has done a good job of mission pacing and level pacing too. I've never felt like i had to grind for a level, but at the same time, about level 20, every level feels like an accomplishment.
A lot of review have said that this is an online single player game, and they must have chosen a crappy server, because i'm constantly questing in groups with random player and doing Heroic missions and regular missions too that require multiple people. Because its so close to launch, there are always new people ready and willing to do missions. If you can't (or just don't want to) find people to quest with, its pretty much your own fault, or you are on a bad server. Don't be shy, ask around in the general chat about missions. I like the server i chose (holla to all my peeps in Keller's Void) and i have seen that both the republic and empire both have lots of people on both sides.
Every class has something cool and unique about them. Looking at them all, none sticks out as a weak or useless class. Every class has a purpose and can be useful in quests or PVP. My Sith Sorcerer is a healer and my Gunslinger is a Range DPS. Both have their respective combat roles, and both are fun to play with. My Sorcerer may be a healer, BUT HE CAN STILL SHOOT LIGHTNING OUT OF HIS HANDS!!! That alone is cool for me. I advise you to do some research before you pick a class. There is something for everyone and every kind of play style.
An MMO is quite an investment, both time and money-wise. Its a 60 dollar disc, and a monthly fee to play the game, But I am sold on the game. It is worth every penny. I recommend that everyone should try the game. If you don't like the story, then cancel after the 30 day trial. I personally love the game, and I can't wait to see what happens next in the future. I want to see my characters reach the level cap and start new ones. You can easily spend 200+ hours playing the game and not be done. I am excited to see how Bioware will approach expansions and such, but as is right now, Bioware hit the ball out of the park and gave me the star wars game I've always wanted.
