Petaluma Teachers To Strike, Union Says

The labor union that represents many Petaluma school teachers says that its members will conduct a one day strike on Wednesday, May 24.

SONOMA COUNTY, CA -- The Petaluma Federation of Teachers, AFT Local 1881, representing teachers and other certificated employees in Petaluma City Schools, say they will conduct a one day strike Wednesday, May 24, in protest of what they say is the school district administration's unfair labor practices and policies harmful to quality education.

AFT Local 1881 represents 460 teachers and other certificated employees in the Petaluma City Schools. The strike would be the union's first organized walkout since it was founded in 1969.

“The administration needs to understand that the way it treats teachers impacts our ability to provide the
best classroom environment for our students,” Petaluma Federation of Teachers President Sandra Larsen said in a statement. “It's their choice. They could offer us the respect and fairness we deserve, as required by law, or they can take responsibility for the first ever strike in this district.”
