Celebrate with music in Calgary this holiday season

The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra is embracing the holiday spirit with the Cirque Musica Holiday Spectacular.

The family orchestral circus spectacular returns with three Christmas performances – including a Saturday matinee – at the Jack Singer Concert Hall Dec. 2 and 3. The show features aerialists suspended high above the orchestra and gymnasts performing feats, choreographed to orchestral holiday favourites.

Resident Conductor, Karl Hirzer will lead the CPO in this special holiday performance.

“This will be one of the most exciting concerts of the year featuring well-known holiday music including riveting classics by Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Schubert,” says Hirzer. “The Cirque Musica performance is an extravagant spectacle that will leave a long-lasting impression.”

Adding to the family fun, guests can check out the giant snow-globe on site for photo-ops, and those who are social-savvy can utilize snapchat with a custom geofilter made especially for this performance.

Mountain View Connection presents: Repository of Musical Dreams – A Journey into the World of James Joyce

This chamber music concert features Lee Hoiby’s Piano Quartet: Dark Rosaleen – Rhapsody on an Air by James Joyce. The music is based on a tune from James Joyce’s effort to compose music for James Clarence Mangan’s beautiful poem Dark Rosalee” in 1902. Also on the programme: Gustav Mahler’s Piano Quartet in A minor. Tickets include a reception catered by The Restaurant at Lougheed House and an opportunity to explore the House and Gardens.

Calgary Boys’ Choir presents: Beautiful December

Concert will feature excerpts from Benjamin Britten’s beloved Ceremony of Carols, with guest harpist Gianetta Baril and a variety of other pieces that celebrate the season, from Disney to sing along Christmas favourites.

Calgary Wind Symphony presents: Mistletoe and Mischief
