In pictures: Heat wave grips India
The unrelenting summer sun has been scorching parts of northern and eastern India for several days now.
The Indian capital, Delhi, recorded the season's highest temperature of 45 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.
The Yamuna river in Delhi provided some relief from the soaring temperatures.
Uttar Pradesh has been sweltering with maximum temperatures rising up to five degrees Celsius above normal in many areas. The city of Allahabad has been the hottest in the state - it recorded 46.6 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.
The weather office has forecast that the heat wave will continue over the next 24 hours.
The rising mercury, accompanied by hot winds, has made life miserable for people across the region.
