Student Success: inequalities and differential opportunities

23 Sep 2021 | Advance HE Student Success is a six-month longitudinal project for the Connect Benefit Series 2021-22 focusing on access, retention, attainment and progression, and embedding employability in higher education. This is the fourth in a series of podcasts previewing the findings of a literature review on employability, 2016-21.

As part of the Connect Benefits Series on Student Success Advance HE will publish a literature review on employability, 2016-21, which aims to identify specific impact and evidence in relation to embedding employability within higher education.

This short podcast series offers a preview of the dominant themes emerging from the review undertaken by the research team from Oxford Brookes University. In this fourth podcast, Dr Maia Pal, Senior Lecturer in International Relations, Oxford Brookes University is joined by Dr Shirley Shipman, Principal Lecturer (Student Experience) and Programme Lead (Law), Oxford Brookes University to discuss the aspects of the literature review focusing on inequalities and differential opportunities of employability. 

In particular, Dr Shipman discusses the impact of employability interventions explored in the literature, which highlight the potential for interventions to perpetuate inequalities for disadvantaged student groups, as well as the plurality of types of human capital and their impact in successful entry into the labour market.
