AcupunctureAcupuncture is a great option if traditional pain treatments are not working. There is a growing body of medical research that acupuncture can treat various medical conditions. But despite the effectiveness of this procedure, many patients may feel anxious about the first trip to the acupuncturist.

Preparing For An Acupuncture Exam

The great news about acupuncture is that there are no special preparations you must undergo before a treatment. You will simply need to undergo the usual process of checking the acupuncturist’s training and credentials. Non-physician acupuncturists must pass an exam by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.

The Initial Consultation

The acupuncturist will look over your symptoms, behavior and lifestyle in order to determine the type of acupuncture treatment that would be best for you. He or she will examine:

  • Your pulse
  • The color of your skin
  • The shape and color of your tongue
  • The areas of your body where you experience pain

After an evaluation, the treatment plan will typically involve one or two treatments each week. The frequency of treatments vary person to person and could be more frequent if the condition is severe. You will be informed about how the specific treatment for the day will be carried out.

The Treatment

You will need to undress. A gown or towel will be provided for your modesty. Then, very thin needles will be inserted at various pressure points in a manner that will minimize any discomfort. Depending on the treatment, the acupuncturist may:

  • Move the needles
  • Apply heat
  • Apply electrical pulses

The needles are kept in place for as long as 20 minutes. When the needles are removed, there is no discomfort.
