Hello Possums! Hillary Clinton swears in junior official in Dame Edna-style wacky sunglasses and plastic beads

As one of America's leading ladies, Hillary Clinton is used to having her appearance scrutinised.

She has laughed off remarks about her wearing glasses without make-up and even met the creators of an internet parody poking fun at her tough-girl image.

Now, once again proving she can take a joke, Mrs Clinton spiced up an official ceremony by wearing wacky Dame Edna-style sunglasses and plastic beads.

The 64-year-old dressed up in the purple accessories for the swearing in of assistant secretary for public affairs Michael Hammer.

She told a roomful of Mr Hammer's family, friends and colleagues that the day was not only about him but purple too, which is her favourite colour.

As those present clapped and laughed, she joked: 'Mike, I was in a real dilemma.

'I have pantsuits in nearly every color – except purple.'

Turning to Mr Hammer's wife and daughters, she explained that because they were dressed in purple, she should also be 'appropriately attired'.

She then put on the costume jewellery and her 'piece de resistance' - the purple and green wing-tipped sunglasses.

In April, Mrs Clinton showed she kept up with the latest trends by giving approval to an internet spoof about her that went viral.

She met the creators of the Texts From Hillary page, where people post satirical photo compilations of possible conversations between the former First Lady and other politicians and celebrities.

All of the posts used the same original photo showing Mrs Clinton on a military plane checking her Blackberry while surrounded by briefing books.

One post started with a photo of her predecessor, Condoleezza Rice, lamenting to former President George W. Bush that she left her favorite pair of sunglasses in her desk when she left the job.

Mrs Clinton approved of the site and her staff contacted its creators to submit a post themselves and invite them to her office to pose for a picture with the sunglasses-wearing Secretary of State.

Earlier this month, a controversial author claimed that - although she has consistently denied it - Mrs Clinton would run for US President in 2016 - but only 'if her health holds out'.

Ed Klein said Mrs Clinton was planning to take time off to 'get back into shape' and, he unflatteringly added, she looked 'overweight' and 'very tired'.

The author - the man behind books including The Truth About Hillary - says she will only be able to make a White House bid 'if her health holds out' and 'that's a big if,of course'.
