REPORTERO follows a veteran reporter and his colleagues at Zeta, a Tijuana-based independent newsweekly, as they stubbornly ply their trade in one of the deadliest places in the world for the media. In Mexico, more than 50 journalists have been slain or have vanished since December 2006, when former President Felipe Calderón came to power and launched a government offensive against the country’s powerful drug cartels and organized crime groups. As the drug war intensifies and the risks to journalists become greater, will the free press be silenced?
REPORTERO was broadcast nationally on P.O.V. (PBS) on January 7th, 2013 and screened at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, the Human Rights Watch Film Festival (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago) and at the International Documentary Film Festival of Amsterdam (IDFA), among other festivals. In Mexico, the film screened in 12 cities through Ambulante and in the U.S. we screened in over 30 communities through our partnerships with The Fledgling Fund and P.O.V.
This film is a co-production of Quiet Pictures and ITVS, with funding provided by The Ford Foundation, the Sundance Documentary Institute, Cinereach and Latino Public Broadcasting.
