September 20, 2019

roast_news.pngA journalist who has reported from more than 25 countries and the province's education minister will be the special guests as the Saskatoon Public Schools Foundation hosts its ninth annual Alumni Celebrity Roast Nov. 7 at Evan Hardy Collegiate.

Hon. Gordon Wyant, Saskatchewan's Minister of Education and a 1974 graduate of Evan Hardy, will be on the hot seat as the subject for roasters Michael Couros and Hon. Don Morgan. Susan Ormiston, a senior correspondent for CBC News and a member of the Evan Hardy class of 1977, will be the event's guest speaker.

The evening features a light-hearted roast of Wyant and stories from Ormiston's career as an award-wining journalist, along with silent and live auction items and dinner. Proceeds from the Celebrity Roast will be used to fund unique educational opportunities that enrich and support our students' learning such as our Summer Reading Camps, Early Learner Tutor Program, and Programs of Excellence Grants.

Tickets for SPS Foundation Alumni Celebrity Roast are $150 each or a $900 for a table of six for $900. Tickets can be purchased online.

Raised in Saskatoon, Wyant attended Evan Hardy and later graduated from the College of Law at the University of Saskatchewan in 1986. He was elected as a trustee to the Saskatoon Public School Board in 2000 and served as chair for two years. He served as a city councillor from 203 to 2010, when he was elected MLA for Saskatoon Northwest in an October 2010 by-election. In 2018, Wyant was appointed Deputy Premier and Minister of Education. He is also the minster responsible for SaskBuilds and Priority Saskatchewan.

During her career Ormiston has reported from conflict zones including Afghanistan, on natural and industrial disasters, and extensively covered Nelson Mandela, including his election as president of South Africa in 1994, and his death nearly 20 years later. As the CBC's London correspondent Ormiston covered stories including the European debt crisis along with a royal wedding and baby. She has also reported on mega-sporting events including the London Olympics and Brazil's World Cup.
