If there was one takeaway from Sunday’s panel with the cast of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy at the Paleyfest Television Festival in Los Angeles, it’s that Grey’s fans are all kinds of passionate about their show and its characters.

Currently in Season 13, the series is as creatively strong as ever and after surviving the departure of original cast member Patrick Dempsey and dealing with how Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) has lived beyond life with McDreamy. Adoring fans showed up at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood wanting to know more about the hot storylines right now, including a fan-favorite pair who recently got back together after much time apart.

In the “Who He Is and What He Is To You” episode that aired on March 16, April Kepner (Sarah Drew) and Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) finally found their way back to each other…at least during their time away from Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Drew shared her excitement over getting out of the hospital set for the week since the story had the two doctors going to Montana together on a case. “We were in the mountains and it really did feel like we were shooting a movie,” she beamed. “It was really neat to get the chance to get out of the hospital and follow just one specific story all the way through to the end.”

But what about that Jackson-April hook up? Is this the start of the characters finally coming back together for good? “I think the main takeaway from that experience in Montana,” Drew said, carefully, “is there’s so much love there, there’s so much respect there and they know each other so well. Whether it continues and moves towards romance or stays platonic, we know for sure that these two are going to be okay and they will always depend on one another.”

Also in the episode, which was directed by Kevin McKidd, who plays Dr. Owen Hunt, viewers met someone we hadn’t seen before in Jackson’s father (played by Eric Roberts), who happened to live in the same Montana town as the hospital they were visiting. Williams, for one, was glad to finally have his alter ego’s father finally materialize.

“I was excited,” Williams said. “It’s been a big cloud hanging over the character for his entire life and my career playing him. It’s been such a gaping hole, so being able to fill that in with a human being, a person that you can make eye contact with, and ask all these questions…it was a very exciting process.”
