A Bransholme dance school took to the stage in Manchester and blew the competition away following a year of fundraising which helped them get there.

Roar Dance Academy, in Wawne Road, Bransholme, took two street dance teams to the East Midlands Street Dance Championships where they strutted their stuff and walked away with eight trophies.

Their success follows a long year of hard fundraising to try and get the dancers to the championships

Dance teacher, Rebecca Crisp, said: “The tickets for the event is £17 each so if you want to go as a family it all adds up. Then the coach is £40 and then the cost of costumes it adds up and we felt bad for the parents paying it all out so we thought we would fundraise.”

The dance troup has put on a whole variety of fundraisers this year, including a summer show, an arts and crafts fair and even a sponsored Humber Bridge walk, where one student raised a huge £200 by herself.

Rebecca said: “We’ve been fundraising for a year and it was just brilliant when we got to Manchester. We came away with two trophies for the teams and six trophies for the duo pieces. Everyone got a medal and trophy to take home too.

“Our dancers are mostly Bransholme-based and walk to their local sessions to train at Kingswood Academy, where we hold our lessons. We have got through to the finals in Blackpool which will take place in April but we’re not going to attend.

“We’re going to take the year to train and become even better ready for the Yorkshire championships next year. We’ll start fundraising to get there at our Christmas show this year.”
