A north-east wheelchair athlete will embark on a 1,000-mile journey this weekend.

Kenny Herriot will set off from Kent on Sunday and will aim to make it to John O’Groats in the Highlands within the space of 12 days.

He is embarking on the cycle in aid of charity Absafe – which runs the only interactive safety education centre in the north-east of Scotland.

Funds raised will be used to engage with schools and businesses in the area to boost safety awareness.

Mr Herriot said: “I’m really excited to be setting off and taking on this mammoth challenge in support of a great local safety charity.

“I’d like to thank everyone for their generous donations and ongoing support throughout the many months of training.

Absafe bosses are hoping others in the north-east will be inspired to engage in other fundraising activities for them.

Emma Bellu, chief executive, said: “This is our first major fundraising event and we’re thrilled to have local athlete, Kenny, on board.

“We can’t wait to see him set off on this huge challenge and track his progress.

“We’ve received tremendous support and donations, which has allowed us to invest in essential kit which is needed throughout Kenny’s journey.”

“We would love to see as many people in Aberdeen and across the north-east of Scotland as possible get involved, have fun and raise as much as they can.”
