Put your swimming costume away. Halt all plans of spending your summer in your local pool to pretend you’re on holiday.
Turns out public swimming pools are much, much more disgusting than we previously thought.
A new review from the Centers for Disease Control involved 84,000 inspections of 48,632 public swimming facilities (meaning pools, hot tubs, gym Jacuzzis, and water parks) around the U.S.
The results are pretty disturbing. Around 80% of the inspections found at least one health violation, such as harmful pH levels, dangerous levels of disinfectant, and issues with pool safety equipment.
So basically, when you hit up a public pool you’re risking skin and eye irritation, infections, and, um, drowning. Let’s not even mention the pee levels in there.
Now, the good news here is that the research was done across the pond, so pools in the UK might be safer and cleaner. We hope.
Maybe stick to your original plan of making friends with someone with a pool and hang out at their house. Or if you’re planning a holiday in America, swim in the sea. Or just make yourself a paddling pool.
Whatever. Let’s just never swim again. Bleurgh.
