The Red Diary/The Re[a]d Diary, a flip-book graphic novel, has been unveiled by Image Comics.

The book is the result of a collaboration between Man of Action writer Steven T Seagle and Eisner-winning painter Teddy Kristiansen.

Kristiansen first published The Red Diary in Europe as Le Carnet Rouge, which tells the "tale of a Vermeer painting with questionable provenance and a diary that reveals its secrets".

Captivated by the artwork but unable to read it in the original French and Danish editions, Seagle wrote a new script inspired by his interpretation of the comic.

"It started to dawn on me that even though I was taken with Teddy's book, I had no idea what it was about! Just a story I'd started to make up in my head about what I assumed was happening in his pictures," said Seagle.

"Eventually, I got Teddy to let me write my version of what I thought was going on before working with him on the translation of what was actually going on.

"It's amazing that one set of images could support two totally different tales. Because despite my best forensic efforts, our two stories turned out nothing alike."

Seagle's interpretation, The Re[a]d Diary, will be packaged together with the original in its first English-language translation.

The creators have collaborated on various projects since 1995 including Vertigo's House of Secrets and It's a Bird...

Image's hardback The Red Diary/The Re[a]d Diary will be released on June 13.
