LANSING, MI – The Lansing City Council will hold a public hearing on a proposed $6.4 million brownfield redevelopment tax incentive for Emergent BioSolutions, the maker of the anthrax vaccine.
The company plans to invest $108 million over the next
five years to upgrade its Lansing campus.
In the first phase, set to begin June, the company will construct a $9.6 million, 32,000-square foot administration building and make about $4 million worth of upgrades to the campus' infrastructure.
If approved, the brownfield plan would capture about $10.7 million in new taxes the project is expected to generate. Approximately $6.4 million would be paid back to the developer for making environmental and public infrastructure improvements to the land.
The council will gather public input on the plan tonight during a public hearing. From there, the plan has to go through the committee process before getting a full vote from the council.
Also on tonight's agenda are a tribute to the city's
striking Red Cross workers, who have been picketing their place of employment
for more than a month; a special land use permit for developer Pat
Gillespie's planned mixed-use development at the site of the former Silver Dollar, 3411 E. Michigan Ave.;
and the introduction of an ordinance that would require businesses to offer
parking for bicycles.
The council meets first as Committee of the Whole, beginning at 5:30 p.m., when they'll discuss several issues related to Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero's proposed Fiscal Year 2013 budget. Then they'll meet for general business at 7:30 p.m.
Both meetings will be held at the council's chambers on the 10th floor of Lansing City Hall.
