As Expected – July 3-4 Had Many Bad Crashes

July 5, 2017

A few days ago, I wrote a blog post about how risky July 3-4 is for car crashes. Curiosity got the best of me, so I thought I would take a look at the news and see what happened over that time period. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look very good.

I searched Google for the following: July 3 2017 car crash Philadelphia and July 4 2017 car crash Philadelphia

I performed these searches at 11:00 on July 5, 2017. You can copy my searches by clicking on the links above. Keep in mind, the results will change based on location, time, and date, as we move further away from the 4th. I found major accidents that happened on July 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.

A Sampling of Serious Car Crashes in the Philadelphia Area

One of the top stories involved a truck crash on the Blue Route, along with a rescue effort. Apparently, a tractor trailer overturned and a number of folks jumped out of their own cars to help rescue the driver. One of the rescuers thought that the driver was simply exhausted. A common problem for those who spend their lives hauling products around the country for us.

Another major incident happened on Northbound I-95. One person died and at least five people were injured on Sunday night. All northbound lanes had to be closed down.

In Northeast Philadelphia, a deadly accident happened on Roosevelt Boulevard.

Fatal Crashes Around July 4 in 2015

The United States government runs a system called the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS.) Anyone can run queries using this system to look up information about fatal car accidents. Currently, the database only goes back to 2015, so I ran a query for that year.

In Pennsylvania on July 3, 2015, we had 2 fatal crashes. Only July 4, 2015, we had 4 fatal crashes. Nationally, on July 3, 2015, we had 98 fatal crashes. Then, on July 4, 2015, we had 129 fatal crashes. In New Jersey, on July 3, 2015, there were no fatal crashes. On July 4, 2015, there was 1 fatal crash.

Based on the news, it looks like we are on course to have more fatal crashes in Pennsylvania this year than we had in 2015. When full reports come out, I will update this information, and let you know what happened.
