About Composting Day

When is Learn About Composting Day? This holiday is always celebrated on May 29

Learn About Composting Day is a great opportunity to “Go Green” and help the environment. You don’t have to be a gardener to participate in this holiday. Everyone can get into the act of recycling plant and vegetable matter into rich and valuable soil. If you are not a gardener, you can give compostable materials you have to a gardening friend. It makes you feel good, knowing you are doing your part to keep our environment a little bit cleaner. You may be surprised at how easy it is to compost. And, everyone can do it. Use this May 29 holiday to begin eco-friendly composting.

As you learn about composting today, you will also see the wide array of ways you can compost. You can start a simple compost pile in your backyard. Or, you can select a range of composters, from compost bins and compost barrels to compost tumblers. You can even use an indoor compost pail. More on Composters and Compost Tumblers.

What to Compost

As you learn about this process of composting, you will be surprised at all the things you can use. It is common knowledge, that you can use garden and yard vegetation, as well as kitchen (vegetable) scraps. But, you can also recycle many other things, including papers, untreated wood, and cardboard. Cardboard paper towels and toilet paper holders are great items to keep out of the waste stream.

You can use compost around your plants, to feed them, keep the weeds down, and help retain soil moisture. If you don’t have a yard, you can give it away to family and friends that do. Your reward will be flowers, vegetables, or herbs from thankful gardeners.

Did you Know?  You can make Compost Tea with your compost materials to feed your indoor and outdoor plants!  It will save you $$$.

History and Origin of Learn About Composting Day

Bob Matthews from Rochester, NY, and owner of Holiday Insights created this special day in 2011. This holiday is the result of his love of gardening and a desire to do his part to help the environment.

We are strong advocates of the “Go Green” environmental movement. Why send plant matter to the waste stream when it is easy to recycle these materials into valuable, fertile soil? We believe everyone can practice composting, to leave a better world for our children.

As a Boy Scout leader, Matthews follows the Boy Scout motto “Reduce, Re-Use, Recycle”. Recycling and reusing decayed plant matter is a great way to reuse a wide range of things that otherwise would go unnecessarily into the waste stream.
