Hard drive with patient information stolen from LSU Health New Orleans office
An external hard drive containing patient information from approximately 2,200 people was discovered stolen in March from an LSU Health New Orleans office.LSU officials said the theft was reported March 6 at the Department of Neurology Research on Bolivar Street.The school said it notified law enforcement about the theft and a person was arrested, but the hard drive, which contained patient lists for research studies, has not been found.Patients who had information on the hard drive were identified by reconstructing files from the researcher's desktop computer, LSU said. Officials said patient information included names, birth dates and diagnosis and treatment codes. It did not include Social Security numbers, credit card or bank account information.LSU is notifying patients about the incident. The school said patients of doctors Piotr Olejiniczak, Bridget Bagert, Gabriel Tender, Amparo Gutierrez, Bruce Fisch and Edward Mader from 1998 to 2009 who do not receive a notification letter should call 844-557-2564 to learn whether their information was on the missing hard drive.The school said it's uncertain whether any of the data has been accessed or misused. Patients are also encouraged to visit www.identitytheft.gov.LSU said it requires users of its IT system to take certain measures to prevent unauthorized disclosure of protected health information, including encrypting mobile devices. The policy was not followed in the March theft and the school has taken remedial action, officials said.Other measures are being taken to update security policies.LSU is offering a one-year subscription to a credit monitoring service for affected patients, officials said.
