Duchess Meghan made a surprise appearance at the British Fashion Awards

I’m not sure how I feel about the Duchess of Sussex doing so many unannounced trips the past few weeks. On one side, Meghan seems to be taking a step back and letting the Cambridges have their moment (which I suspect was the partly the short-term goal of the smear campaign). On the other side, I think all of us who like Meghan a lot want to see more of her. So she managed to find a way to do an unannounced event AND get lots of attention: the Duchess of Sussex attended last night’s British Fashion Awards. Rosamund Pike came out on stage and introduced Meghan, and Meghan got to announce a special award:

That’s really nice. Obviously, Meghan wore Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy to the event. It appears to be a simple black velvet gown with one shoulder, and the fit is exquisite. Meghan proudly embraced her bump while Keller accepted her award.

Meanwhile, Meghan’s “friend” spoke to Katie Nicholl about the Thomas Markle situation, and how Meghan still has that motherf–ker canceled:

A friend close to Meghan says that, once again, Thomas Markle’s efforts to make a connection through the press have likely backfired. “I understand there has been one conversation between Meghan and her dad since the wedding, when Meghan made it clear that they could only have a relationship if he kept his silence,” the friend told Vanity Fair. “She told him that he couldn’t speak to the press, plain and simple. But he keeps doing that, and so she feels that she cannot trust him.”

The friend continued, “She has also said if they are to have a relationship, then he has to cut off contact with the rest of his family, including Samantha, who Meghan blames for a lot of the problems with her father. The thing is, whatever Samantha has done, she is still Thomas’s daughter, so that’s a hard call. And as for speaking to the press, he says he doesn’t know how else to get Meghan’s attention.”

[From Vanity Fair]

Sounds about right – Meghan isn’t going to suddenly start speaking to Thomas because he’s giving another damn interview to the Daily Mail, or The Sun, or to Good Morning Britain or whatever else. She told him what he needed to do, and he refuses. So she refuses to engage with his toxic bulls–t.

    She looks amazing!

    • Meowuirose says:

I thought members of the BRF weren’t allowed to wear non neutral nail polish publicly? She is stunning but the hair isnt my favorite. Otherwise she is glowing and content looking. Good for her.

      • Royalwatcher says:

You thought wrong. Absolutely not true. See Victoria Arbiter’s preemptive tweet from last night.

      • ojulia123 says:

There are articles floating around questioning if she “broke protocol” by wearing dark nail polish. For goodness sake, who cares?

      • Dixiebells says:

Here’s the thing. Or what? Seriously. What happens. You get a memo? Kicked out? I can buy that maybe in laws are told the queen’s style preferences but I think Meghan is apparently confident enough to say, ok I’ll do some of that, but sometimes I want fun nail polish and I’m an adult. Maybe this is where some of the diva rumors are coming from. But it doesn’t strike me as much as diva as a woman confident and sure of her of her choices. Stylistically or otherwise.

I also the queen is far more pragmatic than we think. She saw three of her children’s marriages blow up in spectacular fashion. I really doubt she’s losing sleep over nail polish color.

      • Adee says:

I don’t see the nail polish thing as a big deal.

It seems to be the Queen’s personal preference for nude colors, She’s not wearing it around the Queen.
After the Queen passes, they’ll probably do away with that rule.

It went with her outfit, and she probably removed it after the night’s activates.

      • TheOriginalMia says:

It’s a choice, not protocol. The Queen prefers clear nails, and that’s what she does. William doesn’t like colored nails, so Kate goes with clear.

      • VeryVeryTerryJerry says:

I think for gala or evening events that it’s acceptable actually. Daytime/official appearances: light colors/neutrals.

      • jan90067 says:

There are pics out there with Diana with red nails. IIRC, TQ “prefers” a pale nail for OFFICIAL engagements (like wearing stockings (tights) and closed toe shoes), but on their own time, it’s *almost* anything goes (I mean, of course you aren’t going to see a RF woman going down the street in a tube top and short-shorts!). But nail polish and such is your time, your choice.

And yes, she looks stunning here. I love the sleek hair and the richness of the velvet gown. Great makeup, too. Just beautiful

      • MeghanNotMarkle says:

Kate doesn’t wear nail polish because William doesn’t like it. Other than that I think it’s kind of anything goes except for official functions. This was on her own time.

      • Jules says:

Diana wore bright red nail polish all the time. She wore it in the daytime as well as for evening events and Eugenie has been seen wearing “nail art.” Meghan’s burgundy nails were tasteful and appropriate for the season and for the event.

    • Famika says:

      She looks Happy and Gorgeous!
Get ready for Daily Mail hater aid. Lol

      Love Meghan, she’s glowing.

      • Nana says:

I stupidly looked at their comments page about this event (having not visited in years). That place is the embodiment of why humanity is reversing straight back into the primordial soup at an ever increasing rate….

    • Famika says:

      Ditto Edit

    • Ellaus says:

She looks like a goddess! Frigging amazing! I would wear this head to toe in a heartbeat. I love it! And I know the bump cupping is a bit “in your face” bit a) such great pictures and PR and b) sometimes thE baby doesn’t stop kicking and “restraining” (cupping) like that calms the baby.

Anyhow, she looks like a million dollars!

    • LahdidahBaby says:

YES! I love her gown–it’s beautiful on her and was fitted perfectly to her body. Her arms and shoulders look lovely, as does her beautiful skin. Also love her hair, so sleek and (thankfully!) without the usual big loose pieces flopping around. I think this is one of Meghan’s very best looks ever. The Afghani arts and crafts jewelry is a wonderful touch, and so true to Meghan’s worldview and social conscience.

Everyone is having hissy fits about how she keeps cradling her babybelly, and yeah I’ll admit that how often she did it might have been a bit much, but I think she is unconsciously feeling protective of her unborn child.

And with the hateful invective about Meghan in the British tabs, plus her a’hole father’s renewed verbal assaults, who can really blame her?

      Bravo, Meghan! Well done.

    • BCity says:

YES!!! I literally let out a “woohooo!” when I saw these pictures 😂😂. Come through girl, come through!!

    • Princessk says:

When l saw the video of her on stage, and the rapturous applause and standing ovation, l was really overwhelmed with joy after all she has been through. Her little speech was great and an oblique response to the hate campaign she has endured these two weeks.

  2. Amy says:

Meghan, you look gorgeous and give me the number of your PT so I too can have those arms – but why the cupping like that??!! Both hands on top or both hands underneath = comfortable. But this looks SO forced…

    • dietcokehead says:

Neither you nor I can speak to what is comfortable for Meghan. Maybe she likes holding her stomach that way, or maybe she just wanted to show off the belly to the people excited to see her.

      • Saucypop says:

I watched the full video of it and the double cupping for like 4+ mins looked so forced and kind of staged/performative. I’m Not about it either

    • Natalie S says:

I watched a clip of this last night and right when Meghan steps back and CWK begins to speaks, Meghan stiffly does the double bump hug. It does look forced. I don’t care about her touching her bump in general or that she touched her belly at other times. I think the whole Lainey cupping thing is beyond dumb (except when it’s a dude doing that to a woman) but I think Meghan had a idea of how to stand and she ended up overdoing it at one point when she did the double belly clutch.

She looked stunning. I hope she doesn’t feel uncomfortable being scrutinized while pregnant by an unfriendly media that once referred to Fergie as the Duchess of Pork.

    • Aoife says:

Nah! I did the same when pregnant and it came totally naturally. She’s excited and protective! It’s a beautiful look, imo.

    • K-Peace says:

I used to think that cupping of pregnant bellies was tacky too, but I just gave birth 3 months ago, and i found myself doing it often throughout my pregnancy. In fact i would do it without even thinking about it, and i would also do it on purpose at times, when i was thinking about my baby and just wanting to “feel close to him” (that’s the best way i can put it into words). Or if he was kicking me, and i wanted to feel the kicks. It’s Meghan’s first pregnancy.–In my opinion, we should all just let her enjoy her pregnancy without critiquing her pregnancy-related actions.

    • Eden75 says:

Unless that is what keeps the baby from booting her in the bladder/kidneys/stomach/pick an organ.

I had to do this with my son for a month or two (until I actually just could reach like that anymore) because if we were some place loud, he would start with the punching and kicking. This was the only hold that would get him to stop.

Whatever her reason, her bump, her prerogative.

      • ab says:

this is what I was thinking when I saw the photos. I also had to “cup” quite a lot with my son because he was super active to the point that it could get uncomfortable. the only thing that would calm him was to put pressure on my belly with my arms, or rub the spot where his feet were sticking out.

      • Lokigal says:

yeeepppp.. i was teaching when i was pregnant and found that even though the double handed under was easiest in terms of relieving pressure, the optics of it especially when in front of people; bored kids during assembly with their imaginations running wild dont need my hands near crotch while pregnant >< . the belly hug as i called the one hand on top one hand under position was the most comfortable for me in terms of adjusting the weight or positioning the baby or simply adding comforting pressure to them when they got too feisty in there.

i found myself doing it a lot more with the second baby after going through 6 miscarriages before getting her. maybe meghan does it more because she feels protective and/selfconscious standing in front of those people.

    • Mimi says:

The haters are always trying to control this woman’s body.

Meghan touches her hair too much
Meghan touches her husband too much
Meghan touches her belly too much

The attempts to police her behavior are so blatantly racist and classist and they need to be called out.

      • Franny Days says:

I do think it’s annoying to be policing her body but to be fair people were ALWAYS complaining about Kate touching her hair. We don’t need to police women in general.

      • Nev says:

        WORD.

I hope she has a safe and happy pregnancy. In the meantime, twirl on dem haters.

      • Famika says:

Yup, the Hater aid is strong.
Meghan has been stellar at everything and some can’t stand it.

I think ITS the fact that she looks happy despite all the nasty press crap and hate thrown at her.

Meghan rocks. Love this lady so much.

      • Royalwatcher says:

Famika – I also think the haters really thought/wished/hoped she wouldn’t get pregnant so soon (if ever) and that Harry would dump her before a pregnancy. But, boom, honeymoon baby and now their heads are exploding that the whole time they were writing articles and snarky comments about how old Meghan is or how she’d need IVF assistance, she was already pregnant. And, Harry is so attentive and loving toward Meghan showing that their delusional narratives are really based on nothing, lol.

    • Erinn says:

I think she’s a little self-conscious, honestly. She’s worked in an industry that puts tiny women on a pedestal and being thin is sadly almost necessary for a lot of actresses. She doesn’t have a large bump yet (she’s got a cute one, but it’s not like she’s THAT far along) and I think she feels slightly self conscious at this stage because she’s suddenly a lot bigger than normal – even if it’s because she’s growing a tiny human.

      • Eliza says:

I too think it’s too highlight it’s a bump; because she wants to ensure every picture reads ‘pregnant’ not ‘wide’. She had a boxy torso she almost always tried to de-emphasize and with pregnancy you can’t hide the stomach anymore; even in a tent.

So woman who was self conscious about a body part, is more so with pregnancy. You can love your bump and be self conscious about your looks at the same time.

      • Lexa says:

Agreed, Erinn. I assumed she was doing that double bump hold to highlight the bump in photos because the black velvet is like a photo black hole. In the photos taken head on when she’s not doing it, you can barely tell there’s a bump there because of the fabric and color. I do think it looks a bit unnatural to go top and bottom, but, hey, I’ve never been pregnant so I don’t know what’s comfortable.

      • My3cents says:

Just like ERINN and ELIZA said, the belly cupping is a lot photo op, and a little making sure that when this photo is used again, ( internet lives forever right?) we’ll remember she was pregnant, and not just gained weight.
Personally having gone through 3 pregnancies and not cupped, to each her own…

    • Mikeyrose says:

Just before her tour to Australia you did not see her cupping her belly once. The moment she lands in Australia when her pregnancy was announced she was cupping at every opportunity. It was definitely a conscious decision on her part. Meghan is PR savvy & she knows that this is a money shot!

      • Royalwatcher says:

Well, I mean, there IS more of a belly to hold now. If you have no “bump” yet, what would you cup? Once her belly got bigger (during the tour) is when we saw more holding. IMO, she started “cupping” when the baby started fluttering and then moving. I feel like in one of the first pictures of her doing that on the tour she also has an expression of surprise or wonder on her face, as if it’s the first flutter or baby movement.

    • Nanny to the rescue says:

Her photo from Australia was praised everywhere (it was a cute one indeed). So she’s trying to get more of the cutesy response. But just like it often happens, the 2nd take looks fake and is therefore criticised.

    • AG-UK says:

my thoughts too she looked great but that belly cupping thing not sure what that is about. Its not like they can’t see she’s pregnant. Have no clue odd to me. The dress was great I love velvet..

    • VeryVeryTerryJerry says:

Those arms come from long-time dedication to yoga 🙂

    • Himmiefan says:

I’m a huge fan, but yeah, hands off the bump!

    • Cerys says:

She looks lovely but the bump holding is beginning to get irritating. It seems a bit forced. Most pregnant women manage to get around quite well without clutching their bump all the time.

    • Jules says:

The tummy holding did seem a little odd to me. That said, I did this occasionally when I was pregnant with both my children when they moved a lot.

    • Sway says:

She NEEDS people to see the belly even when she’s dressed in all black and it’s hardly visible.

  3. Nev says:

    Gorgeous.

  4. Cidy says:

    She looks great!

  5. girl_ninja says:

    Perfection. Her best look yet!

  6. Maddie23 says:

She needs to stop cupping. It looks so tacky.

    • Tanguerita says:

agree. But wait till you get trashed into the ground by fellow celebitchies for saying that.

    • dietcokehead says:

Or she’s excited to be pregnant and resting her hands there gives her joy or comfort? I blame Lainey for this “cupping” nonsense. I sincerely do not understand how she, a woman who has never given birth, has become the authority on what is an appropriate pose for a pregnant lady.

      • Darla says:

I do too. I don’t go there often but I read one of her columns about Meghan and this nonsense came up and honestly, I couldn’t believe what I was reading.

      • Aoife says:

        Yes!

      • EllieMichelle says:

SAME! When people tell her they do it because their bodies have changed and they are more comfortable resting their hands on their stomach (which is not cupping) she says just put your hands by your sides. Ok lady who has never been pregnant so has no idea what it feels like to suddenly have a huge bump in the middle of your body. Oh and that pregnant women infantilize themselves by wearing pink (please wear pink Meghan, pllleaaassseee). She loves to police what other women do.

    • Lily says:

I asked my mother who’s a midwife and a mother of four why Meg kept cupping the belly and she said something quite interesting; that belly cupping may look uncomfortable but to many women it feels like the most natural thing in the world and quickly becomes an instinct throughout the pregnancy. She also said it’s even more frequent with first time pregnant women because they are so happy and proud. So not tacky, just an instinct! I also think we need to stop policing women’s bodies simply because they are in the public eye.

      • Adee says:

Oh wow, that’s such a beautiful thing.

Its kind of the first stages of maternal instincts.
If its soothing and comforting to Meghan and Baby, then even if it looks a little unusual, she should totally do it.

      • jan90067 says:

Lily, that was my take, too! Instinct, pride and joy in her pregnancy… perhaps also a bit of calming the baby, or just wanting to feel the baby’s movements! Whatever the reason, HER BUMP, HER CHOICE. YOU didn’t do it, so it’s not “right”? If you don’t “like” it, don’t look at the pics! Move on. Just like a tv show/movie you don’t like: don’t watch it and moan about it, turn it off. Oh my goodness, it’s not that hard.

      • TeamAwesome says:

If I managed to get my uterus to grow a baby, I would never take my hands off of it, and would not give a second thought to what anyone else had to say.

      • Jules says:

As i commented above—I did this sometimes when the baby moved, especially my youngest. I’m short and slight and she was a large baby which made every movement uncomfortable for me.

    • Erinn says:

I’m someone who doesn’t like the cupping either. But at the same time it doesn’t REALLY bother me. I mean – there’s people who you see just absent-mindedly cupping, and I find it super touching. Honestly, it’s just sweet.

But there are 100% people who do it to draw attention to themselves – and I get that they’re proud, but some of those people are so grating. I guess part of me feels bad for the people who can’t have a child… and some of the cuppers just come off as really braggy. I think they’re a smaller portion over all though, and I usually give the benefit of the doubt. There are some girls I went to school with who are of the more negative category – super proud that they “locked down” (I don’t consider pregnancy a trap in any way – just using this descriptor because it’s the mindset of these people) their crappy boyfriend/husband even though not many people would ever be clamoring to get mixed up in their stupid behavior.

But damn, I am here for awkward pregnancy photos. There are some hilarious photo shoots that people get done, and I really get a kick out of it. It’s in the same league as awkward Christmas cards.

    • Snowflake says:

No, what’s tacky is criticizing it. Who are you guys to decide what’s natural or not? I’ve never been pregnant so idk if I would cup or not. This nitpicking is just ridiculous. Just be honest, you who criticize it dont like her and are just looking for any reason to criticize her.

      • Famika says:

        Preach, Snowflake. So true.
The hater aid and nitpicking is so obvious.
Lol. Meghan looks happy and vibrant, I really think some just simply can’t stand that all the hate thrown is not bringing her down.

Meghan Wins regardless of the crap thrown at her. They will continue to throw it, yet Meghan will THRIVE regardless.

        Harry chose well!

      • TaniaOG says:

AGREED! No one has bothered to mention that when she walked out it probably got crazy noisy and it probably startled the babies. Yup, I’m calling it.

    • Gina says:

Completely agree also the whole photo booth thing is cute but I will say as much as I like the her doing different things I feel like she should be more established before doing these things . Some (ill wait for the troll comments but it is true) think she makes tacky decisions. I personally think more charity work and drop one. Also it wouldn’t hurt to pick a few outfits from British designers michelle Obama often wore here and Ralph Lauren which I loved ….

    • Jamie says:

I think it’s tacky to police another woman’s body.

    • Anastasia says:

How does it hurt you exactly?

    • EllieMichelle says:

LET THE PEOPLE CUP!!! She’s a first time mom, she’s probably excited to be pregnant, and she knows these photos will live on forever.

    • Mel says:

Why does anyone have to care about a pregnant woman touching/not touching her stomach? If she never touched it everyone would yap about that also.

    • Princessk says:

It looks tacky? How can touching or holding your baby be tacky? Do remember this is a first time older mother to be, and everyone is different.

  7. Enny says:

I also love that she’s supporting Charles’s charity with her jewelry!!

    • Lily says:

Isn’t it great!! Something that really makes me enjoy Meghan’s engagements and outings is her preference for ethically made clothing, shoes and jewellery. Pippa Smalls, Reformation, Rothy’s, Outland Denim; all these great brands that are fashionable but support female education, female workers, the environment, etc. It must make Charles happy too!

    • Famika says:

      Oh that’s so nice.
      She’s wonderful.

      The haters have sad faces.

  8. Lucy says:

Ok, this look is pretty much perfect. Great dress, great styling, love the shoes and accessories, and love her dark nails even more. Have there been any “BUT PROTOCOL” complaints regarding the dark polish already?

    • dietcokehead says:

Definitely. People’s headline this morning was about Meghan breaking protocol AGAIN and how The Queen and Kate never steer from sheer, delicate polish on the hands.

      • Toot says:

Which is stupid because Diana wore color polish when she was very married to Charles, and I saw pics of Sophie and Eugenie wearing red, and a purple-ish color.

      • dietcokehead says:

It’s all The Queen and “Princess Kate” 🤮 over at People. Speaking of, People’s defense of calling her Princess Kate was because she is married to a prince. Why isn’t the same courtesy extended to Meghan? 🤔

    • mynameispearl says:

Yes, but just from the Express so far, and its a rag.

      • Famika says:

Royal Reporter has been on a tangent at the EXpress since the Summmer,
He uses his pen for negative since then.

He directly contacted Samantha Markle and got stories and then wondered why he’d been cut off from Meghan.

    • Lara says:

Yes! In the Daily Mail they made a passive aggressive remark about it

    • Rebecca says:

Express brought up both “breaking protocol” and “vulgar” in its headline about the darn nail polish.

    • Jegede says:

Diana & Fergie wore nail polish.

They also wore gowns off the shoulder, strapless, e.t.c while very much married into the Royal Family.

I don’t understand this ‘royal protocol’ myth that has since been accepted as fact.

    • Eliza says:

@DIETCOKEHEAD she is Princess Henry the same as Kate is Princess William. Being a duchess is actually a higher title so they go by that one.

      • Royalwatcher says:

Eliza – I think dietcokehead means why does People magazine call one woman Princess and not the other, since – as you write – they both hold exactly the same titles. But…I think we know why.

      • Famika says:

Yes, Sophie is a Princess, Kate is a Princess and Meghan is a Princess.

In their husbands name Sophie, Kate, Meghan
        HRH the Princess Edward
        HRH ” Princess William
        HRH ” Princess Henry

      • dietcokehead says:

Ummm yes I’m aware of that. British women who marry into the firm are not allowed to be referred to as “Princess Their Name” so they by custom adopt the feminine address of their husband’s highest title. It’s why Princess Michael is Princess Michael. What I was saying is, the policing of her clothing choices, nail polish, body stance, etc., while not referring to her in the same fashion they do her sister-in-law, is very clearly their racism at play.

      • Himmiefan says:

Only women who are born as princesses are called princess first name, like Princess Eugenie.

  9. Toot says:

Meghan looked gorgeous and unbothered with all the crap in the press. Love that.

As for holding the belly, Baby Sussex was probably doing somersaults after that loud cheer when Meghan came out.

  10. Big Eyes says:

For what its worth (analysis to be added in your first sentence/paragraph…I’m not sure how I feel) no pictures or retweet from the BRF official twitter sites. Usually they tweet official and/or personal events that are okayed sanctioned.

    • Royalwatcher says:

This is why the Sussexes need their own social media and PR staff!! Of course it was sanctioned.

I really hope separate staff offices are coming in the new year when Meghan announces her charities/patronages. Now that William and Harry are grown men with families of their own, they need their own staff who can be dedicated solely to either the Cambridges or the Sussexes. It makes no sense to continue to share when none of Charles’s siblings share.

      • Elisabeth says:

It wasn’t listed on the Court Cirrcular, so it wasn’t official work. That’s why there were no pictures on the official royal accounts.

      • Big Eyes says:

Hi Royalwatcher, I am not convinced it was sanctioned. The BRF in the past and to-date have published, liked, retweeted, etc. private events, last minute events, surprise events, official events. whatever events be it personal, private or official.

I DO worry for Meghan, this event has not been mentioned by any of the BRF social media accounts, and that is very significant, because these social accounts are from the (3) courts; BP, CH and KP.

I do agree with you, they need their own social media like The Duke of York. He opened his own official social media account and reports absolutely everything he does, be it private, personal or an official duty.

Elisabeth ^ KP has retweeted a none official Meghan event, i.e. the visit she carried out last week at the University Commonwealth (where she was taking notes). That was not on the court circular, it was a private visit, hence my above comment to Royalwatcher. There is the difference of Approved/Sanctioned/Okayed.

      • Lexa says:

@Big Eyes Her university visit was listed in the Court Circular: https://mobile.twitter.com/Gertsroyals/status/1070469705318744064

      • Royalwatcher says:

Big Eyes – I just really don’t think she would take it upon herself to do something she isn’t “allowed” to do or sanctioned or whatever. Especially not this early in marriage. And, who sanctions private events anyway? The queen? So, every member of the BRF runs their private events by the queen before doing anything? I feel like she’s a bit too busy to be vetting everyone’s schedules…but I don’t really know.

Lexa – isn’t Gert’s Royals just creating her own database of royal events? I don’t think she is getting stuff from any official source. (I could be totally wrong here though as well!) Especially since everytime I checked for any events for Meghan on the official BRF website, nothing would show up.

      • Lexa says:

@Royalwatcher Gert pulls from the CC listings published in The Times.

Also, KP just tweeted about this event (weird timing….) with several photos and part of Meghan’s speech. I bet it’ll be added to the CC later today, too.

      • Royalwatcher says:

It has now been tweeted by KP, so I guess it was “sanctioned” after all! And, yeah, Lexa, the timing is weird. Yet another reason for the Sussexes to have their own admin/PR staff (yeah, lol, I’m gonna keep saying this until I will it into existence).

Lexa – thx for the info about Gert’s royals source.

      • Big Eyes says:

Wink 😉 there you (we) go! smile smile :):) Better late than never, which would have been a severe blow IMO, as Harry Sentebale has always been mentioned, and that cause is private and personal.

^ *Yes, they will eventually have their own official social media when W&K investiture ceremony as POW’s /it will happen simultaneously, deliverance of the Duchy of Cornwall, transfer of the DOS’s to Charles Duchy of Lancaster and Sovereign Grant (although I am 99% sure Charles has already unofficially taken charge of the DOL/SG).

    • Princessk says:

      Another disturbing issue.

  11. Junejuli says:

Is this the same designer that made the badly fitted wedding dress that was widely criticized? I guess the publicity from designing a royal wedding gown can truly propel someone’s career!

    • Royalwatcher says:

It wasn’t widely criticized or badly fitted, but yes, same designer. Also, she was already the head of Givenchy so not sure how much more career propelling she needed!! Google is your friend.

      • Junejuli says:

The fitting of the dress was widely criticized. Google is your friend! Also the designer had not won the award until now. Clearly the difference is the royal wedding & they’re not even trying to mask it by having Meghan present her with the award.

    • Josie says:

Sarah Burton won the same award, the year that she designed Kate’s wedding dress. Samantha Cameron was the special presenter who gave Burton her award.

  12. Kristy says:

She is stunning, I love that dress – elegant and simple.

  13. Anna says:

She looks like she put on a little bit of weight, which suits her as she was tiny before.

  14. Chrissy says:

    One word: Gorgeous!

  15. OCE says:

Duchess Meghan last night was telling the world that she is alright. She was showing us that BLACK GIRL MAGIC and slaying it. This moment on stage was her telling us that she is healthy and rested and at peace with her baby on the way with her new husband. Honestly, I saw this blowing up onTwitter, found the pics, and Kendrick Lamar’s song “Alright” started playing in my head. #BlackGirlMagic #Slay #HowaDuchessdoesit

    • Adee says:

      OCE …Perfectly said!

It’ll take more than this to get to her. She’s got her husband, her baby on the way and her duties to focus on. Haters can keep it moving.

    • Famika says:

      Yyyyyyyeesssssssss! Meghan SLAYED !
Ilove that she looks happy, just her showing up glowing and smiling SLAYED!

      • Kk2 says:

She does look amazing. So gorgeous and elegant. I personally do not like the belly cupping though I certainly understand how it can happen subconsciously (especially when you are self conscious about looking fat vs pregnant). However, she looks so damn great and happy that I can’t even hate on that. I definitely think she is sending a message that she is just fine, great even. Good for her.

    • Yup, Me says:

I also keep thinking of Beyonce in Formation where she says “You know you’re that b*tch when you cause all this conversation.”

  16. Originaltessa says:

I defended the cupping before, but this is some seriously egregious cupping. I think it’s the public nature and formality of the event, and the two arms tightly wrapped around her… is a bit much.

    • Splinter says:

This! I feel it somehow steals the attention from the person receiving the award. I believe actors are much more conscious about how they look and what message they send compared to average people, so this must be deliberate.

      • Elena says:

I agree I like Meghan and love her fashion but this stole the attention from the woman getting the award. I also think Meg should have known that could be the case.

      • Princessk says:

Whether Meghan had cupped her bump or not the attention is always going to be on Meghan. Meghan’s appearance automatically made her the star of the show.

    • Franny Days says:

It does not bother me but I think it’s because she’s cupping the entire bump that it looks a little weird. Most of the times you’re hands are kind of close together or you kind of have one hand resting on the bump. The way she does it reminds me of a move a midwife showed me to remove pressure when you’re 40 weeks.

      • Eliza says:

I would sometimes clasp my hands over my bump like it was a shelf i rested them on when I sat down. I did rub my belly with fetal movement but just in the areas.

But never did i grab either end and hold it for 4 minutes straight in a crowd. I think it was a pose she took on purpose because she wants to look pregnant not wide (but AS IF anyone would think she wasn’t pregnant, but pregnancy body confidence isn’t automatic)

      • EllieMichelle says:

Meh I never did all that either, but sometimes people are just very extra about it. I agree with the people who think she wants the photos and footage to show she’s pregnant and didn’t just gain weight. I usually used my bump as a shelf to rest my hands. I was never a fan of rubbing it, and I used to side eye the moms at preschool who stood there caressing their bumps, but at the end of the day, I’m like you do you girl. Rub that bump.

    • Snowflake says:

Sigh…the criticizing of it is too much.

      • Franny Days says:

Ah sorry Snowflake I really don’t mean to criticize her to harshly!! I think she is so gorgeous and can do whatever she wants.

    • Lindy says:

Of course she knew it would draw attention; this is why she did it.

  17. MCV says:

I love how she makes people mad just with cupping her belly. If I were her I would do it just to see the haters seethe.

    • Royalwatcher says:

Yep, lol. And with the black dress (even though that breaks no protocols and other royals have done it before her) and with the dark nail polish (again even though other royals have done it). I hope she is just laughing all the way back to bed with the man who worships the ground she walks on.

I also think her wearing of that specific Pippa Small jewelry line was a shoutout that she has Charles’s full love and support.

    • Snowflake says:

      It’s ridiculous.

    • EllieMichelle says:

I hope she does it now until the baby is born.

  18. Piper says:

She looks Georgeous and she’s Glowing. Meghan was a surprise guest for Clare so it makes sense she wasn’t announced, possibly unofficial royal event. Her reception there also speaks to how welcomed she is there. People are literally cheering her through all these attacks and her warm spirit. As for dad, sounds about right- TM mentioned before Meghan asked that he stop telling Samantha all her business and stop talking to Samantha. This is probably a huge issue in the rift – Samanatha visiting your house TM getting all the dirt and pics-announcing she’s releasing a tell all book when she delivers, so dad can’t pretend all he’s done is take a few pics. He’s severely damaged their family.

  19. Chrisjam says:

In her speech Meghan said that fashion empowers women. How does wearing expensive designer clothes that the average woman can’t afford empower women exactly? This sounds like something that someone who is completely out of touch would say.

    • Rosie says:

I think it empowers the men (and the odd women) that make a fortune out of it.

      • jan90067 says:

“Fashion” isn’t only designer clothing. “Fashion” is however *you* dress for *yourself* in a way that makes *YOU* feel good/empowered about yourself. It can be a dollar scarf, a thrift store find, or a designer gown. Doesn’t matter what it is, but it makes YOU go out and feel like you can SLAY! THAT is how fashion empowers you, personally.

    • Joro says:

You don’t need to buy luxury brands to feel empowered by fashion. I’ve worn things from forever 21 made me feel like a boss.

      • Delphi says:

Totally agree. Fashion can be commercial and lucrative (and a rip off) for sure, but it can also be art and expression. You can enjoy it without having to spend heaps of money. Many people find it liberating to be able to express themselves through clothes, especially marginalised people. That doesn’t make her out of touch…think about what street style used to mean, or how on the ground innovation from people of colour influences the industry*, or how meaningful fashion can be to members of the LGBTQ+ industry.

I love her whole look and think it’s one of her best of the last year! It’s very thoughtful of her to wear jewellery made in Afghanistan and support Charles’ charity endeavour at the same time.

*whole separate conversation to be had here about the fashion industry ‘borrowing’ this innovation without credit or compensation

    • girl_ninja says:

She was taking about fashion as a whole. Clothing. Go look up videos where homeless men and women are helped out with a free haircut and outfit. Don’t assume it’s just about the label.

      • MrsBump says:

Sorry but a haircut and clean clothes to a homeless man/women has nothing to with the supposed empowerment brought to us by the fashion industry. Clothes are a basic necessity, fashion is not.

    • girl_ninja says:

You’re being purposely obtuse. Clothing and fashion go hand in hand. From new sneakers to a prom dress. That piece of clothing means something to that person. Simple as that.

      • MrsBump says:

Not at all, you seem to be confusing two completely seperate things.
Clothes have existed since time immemorial, the fashion industry is new and geared towards trends and consumerism.

      • Serpentinefire says:

        Totally girl_ninja.

      • A says:

@MrsBump, the fashion *industry* as it exists today is more recent, but fashion as a concept has existed for as long as human beings have been wearing clothes. This is a super strange thing to split hairs about when it’s pretty obvious that she’s not talking about the consumerist industry but fashion as a vehicle for self-expression.

    • Natalie S says:

Haven’t you watched Queer Eye? Wearing something that helps you feel good about the way you look can help with confidence and empowerment.

      • Rosie says:

I think there’s a difference between style and fashion. Fashion exists to get us to spend money. You can be stylish and feel fantastic whilst ignoring fashion and you can look like an idiot following fashion. The fashion industry doesn’t empower anyone but those making a fortune from it. Fast fashion hasn’t empowered the people that live by the Aral sea and those trying to live in areas blighted by the toxicity of fabric production. Traditional Haute Couture and the skills it relies on is a form of art but so much of it today is about money.

    • Snowflake says:

Ok, so would you feel the same going for an interview in an old outfit vs. A new suit? I would feel more confident, when I look good, i feel good. Do you see it now?

      • Rosie says:

Yes a new killer outfit really does make you feel fantastic . However because of fashion I would probably struggle to find something new. Unless I was lucky and the new trends suited me I probably wouldn’t find the fit/colour that I was looking for. I’ve gone whole seasons buying the barest minimum because there’s nothing in the shops I like. Don’t get me started in the drop in quality. I’m high street, but my friend buys designer and it’s the same for her. She’d rather wear her older stuff than buy new inferior products.

  20. Alexandria says:

Her best strategy now is to just keep working. Yes I know this may not be counted or it’s a glam event but she still made the effort.

    She looks amazing.

    • d says:

      “working”

None of the royals work. They “work”.

      • minx says:

        Lol, agree.

      • Gina says:

I take offense to this princess anne is a bloody grafter she works very hard . She has come to Scotland( my second home) very often and some of us enjoy these visits . It’s very exciting for us and I appreciate the attention it gives the charities especially the veterans

      • Rosie says:

I think they work. The Queen is 90+, Prince Charles is 70 and Princess Anne is 68. All past the age of retirement. They might not work in a traditional sense but I personally would find what they do quite draining, but then I’m an introvert.

      • Princessk says:

The royals do work, and what you see in public is just a fraction, a lot is done privately and behind the scenes.

    • Christa says:

This is not work. This is a fashionista celebrity event. My goodness, how the standards have fallen that Meghan going to this event is somehow worthy of praise and is working hard.

      • Kylie Branche says:

If people think this event was a PR win for Meghan, they are sadly mistaken.

      • Bren says:

This event is no different than the Queen sitting next to Anna Wintour at a London Fashion Week show earlier this year. The only difference is that Meghan presented an award to a woman she respects.

Meghan looked lovely. There’s nothing wrong with praising what she wore and her overall appearance.

      • Princessk says:

This was good PR for Meghan. After a terrible fortnight this pregnant lady came out and stood tall and made a lovely speech. Yes, she was among friends, and others who know what it is likely to be unfairly harassed by a hostile media and trolls. Her appearance showed that her star power is as strong as ever, and the dull Cambridge’s will never attract the attention that Meghan can. The next time Meghan meets the ordinary public she will get great support too.

  21. Loretta says:

Stunning, simply stunning and people were wild for her.
Poor UK tabloid, the smear campaign was a big flop LOL

  22. Flying fish says:

    Beautiful.

  23. HelloSunshine says:

Awww I don’t get all the hate for belly cupping! I do it without thinking and because the baby is kicking and flipping around. It’s fun to feel and helps me feel even more bonded with my baby. If that makes me and Meghan tacky, then at least we’re tacky together 😂

  24. Beth says:

I love her dress, and she looks beautiful. I see pregnant women cupping their bellies, and I think it’s probably a natural instinct to hold the belly where their baby is. Meghan standing on stage, all dressed up at an award show, in front of a ton of cameras, double cupping her belly looks like a forced pose, not a natural pose, but it’s her belly to cup if she wants to

  25. Melania says:

The comments of those who judge a woman who cradles her baby bump are cringe and tacky and not Meghan.

  26. Cee says:

    She looks gorgeous and happy.
Stop bashing women cupping their pregnant bodies. It’s a maternal instinct that kicks in almost instantly, especially in first time mothers. It also helps control/soothe the baby doing somersaults inside your body.

  27. Wha1ever says:

The shoes are to die for and the dress is ok but the two handed belly cupping seems so forced like she is trying to remind us that she is pregnant. Yes Meghan we know that you’re pregnant and no the baby isn’t going fall out if you let go!

The one-handed belly pat when she was holding the envelope seems less forced and cringey.

  28. NotHeidisGirl says:

She’s looking beautiful but I’m not into one-shoulder dresses. At all. On anyone.

    • Erinn says:

I agree for the most part. I’ve seen some fantastic ones, but for the most part I find they look awkward.

  29. Lydia says:

She looks like a Greek goddess. I love everything about this look: the velvet one-shoulder dress, the jewels and these sandals are fantastic. One of her best looks ever.

    • Royalwatcher says:

A goddess, that’s what I thought too. The gold jewelry and strappy shoes and one-shouldered dress…she looks absolutely gorgeous. I even love her middle parted hair, slicked back like this. I normally hate the middle part but pulled back like this looks amazing on her. She has such a gorgeous glow about her.

    • Snowflake says:

      I love it too

  30. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

    Love Rosemund Pike.

All these severe hair styles, pulled back so very tight and harsh and mechanical….not a fan. Let the hair fly!

  31. Becks1 says:

I think she looks gorgeous here, and the cupping doesn’t bother me. You do you Meghan.

  32. Chisey says:

You know, I’ve been on Meghan’s side in the whole family drama, but if she told her dad he can’t talk to her unless he cuts off his other daughter, then I think that’s out of line. She absolutely gets to say who she and her eventual kids have a relationship with, but she doesn’t get to dictate the terms of her father’s relationship with his other daughter. The ultimatum seems manipulative and gross. I hope that’s not true and she just decided that he’s toxic to her (which seems completely true!) and is keeping her distance, as is her right, and that she’s not doing it conditionally as a tool to pull strings and force an estrangement between her dad and the awful half sis. That’s not her place and not a healthy thing to do.

    • Toot says:

Meghan probably asked her father to not talk to Samantha about Meghan’s business. I don’t think that’s wrong to ask.

    • Leyton says:

I doubt she would tell him to stop talking to Samantha as a whole. Samantha’s been trashing her a good two years now and she was clearly still talking to her father despite it.

I’m sure she told him to not to Samantha about HER and her business. Which is fair considering the woman hates her.

Thomas has never defend Meghan against his childrens attacks on her or suggest they stop but instead put blame on Meghan for not inviting them which he thinks would have stopped all of it.

    • Lokigal says:

im with Toot and Leyton, i read it as samantha being cut off from the dad feeding her stuff about Meghan.

  33. Eastcoast Go-Getter says:

I was watching and totally shocked when she came out: YOU GO MEGHAN… slay bi@tch lol

If the only takeaway you got from her presence or speech is she’s holding her belly too much (it looks fake or she wants attn) – girl, you’re pressed lol. Anyone married into BRF is fine with being famous on the world stage. As for cupping, there’s no “no cupping in public rule”. It’s not something I did but I can’t imagine being that girl who’s mad about another woman holding her baby-typically new moms do what feels comfortable for them. Lol

  34. Sassy says:

Yes we know how much you guys hate that she’s pregnant with Harry’s child and her cupping her belly reminds you of that let the hate go it’s not healthy for you.

    • Himmiefan says:

Who is mad that she’s pregnant with Harry’s (and hers) child? I’m not into the cupping at all, but I love M & H. Not everything is hate.

  35. Chef Grace says:

Oh please. What is with the OMG! She’s double cupping her baby.
I had two kids and by Goddess I double cupped. Want to know why I did? Because it made me fucking happy to know I had a life inside me. It was a comfort to feel that living being growing inside me. So cup away Your Ladyship. It is a wonderful feeling to have a life inside you.

  36. Lisa says:

    Absolutely gorgeous.

  37. HK9 says:

She looks magnificent. (Full discosure-I love off the shoulder dresses)

  38. bread says:

Maybe she’ll start wearing more British fashion now that she’s mingled with the industry at a ritzy event. And yes, that double-cupping looks very performative.

    • Starkiller says:

Why the hell should she wear fashion designed by people who openly and virulently loathe her?

      • bread says:

The British fashion industry openly hates her? Did I miss something?

      • Bee says:

The same reason she is presenting an award to entertain those same people?

      • Rosie says:

I didnt realise the tabloids were now fashion designers.

      • Sassy says:

Well the Brits doesn’t seem to like her the been on a 2 week going on 3 week smear campaign

      • Rosie says:

Honestly Sassy, the tabloids aren’t a perfect reflection of British opinion or the media. The Sun was pro Brexit yet 48% of the public voted against it.

Men – mainly aren’t interested in the RF and would go straight to the back page for the sport if they were reading a tabloid.

Younger generation – grown up with mixed race kids, not a big deal. Don’t care about the old RF traditions that much and really seem to like Meghan. She’s different/cool.

Middle aged/Pensioners. Split between those that can’t stand a WOC in the palace (the minority), those that worry that she won’t fit but as long everyone is
happy (partic TQ/ Harry) then she’s ok and those that don’t see why they should fund another bloody royal wedding.

To the tabloids it’s a soap opera. They exaggerate/invent and bring up ancient history when it suits them.

My Dad reads the Times he has no idea he’s supposed to hate Meghan and I don’t think he really has an opinion on her good or bad.

      • Princessk says:

The Daily Mail does not represent Britain but they unfortunately do influence weak minded and ill informed people, and they have a strong following of bigots and trolls. Please understand that the people of Britain do not hate Meghan. Influential powers are worried about the Sussexes growing popularity, which makes the dull Cambridge’s look even more boring than they actually are.

  39. Guest says:

She looks amazing. As soon as I saw these pics I rushed over to rd and got my popcorn. Lol….I love to get a laugh at how pressed those ladies are. Especially since they love to play the pregnancy police and tell a woman she shouldn’t be touching her baby bump 🤣🤣🤣

Meghan has amazing confidence. All that bs from the press and she shows up and slays.

    • Seriously? says:

I always lurk on RD and was just laughing at how MAD they were last night.

      • Royalwatcher says:

I can’t stand to even lurk there anymore because the comments are peak-level ‘makes racist comments then defends racist comments by saying anyone who calls them out is the real racist and we treat CP Mary exactly the same, blah blah” and other bull$hit. But I took a peek last night and my favorite comment was that Meghan is a heartless attention-seeking bit@h because she dared to leave the house in a gown on the same night as the Nobel Prize awards. Errr…ummm…ooookay??

    • Seriously? says:

They were seriously losing it. It was actually sad to read the extreme levels of hate being thrown at Meghan. I was indifferent to Meghan for a long time and am still not a stan, but the hate she gets just makes me defensive! And excusing it by pointing to all the other royal women you treat terribly on that board just highlights how sad of a place it has become.

One of my favourite posters, Wisdomheaven (I think they post here on occasion?) popped in and it was so nice to read just 1 not frothing at the mouth insane comment.

  40. Coz' says:

    She looks stunning!

  41. Blacksred says:

I personally know several women who had scares and others who had horrible family around while pregnant both sets of women constantly clutched their bellies like megan. Like they were trying to protect their baby. We have seen how both her fathers side and the British press have been attacking her. She may not even realize she is doing the clutch.

  42. Wowsers says:

The cupping looks so staged and performative, especially in the video. Nothing “natural” about it. Urgh, okay I’m going to run and hide now while the sugars throw stuff at my head.

  43. OSTONE says:

I bet heads are exploding right now in Clarence House and Buckingham Palace. She looks gorgeous though and so happy she seems to be well amid all this PR nightmare of the Firm.

  44. MrsBump says:

Meghan looked gorgeous, the dress, the shoes, nail polish, everything was perfect. I love grecian style dresses on pregnant women. She also spoke beautifully and with confidence.

The speech though wasn’t great, she was there to honour Clare on her big night and instead it was about :
Meghan letting it be known that she knows everyone in the assembly
Meghan talking about how the UK is her new home
Meghan throwing the word “women empowerment” in there for good measure and trying to makes some dubious links between feminism and the fashion industry. Yes, that fashion industry obsessed with youth, unrealistic standards of beauty, and extreme thinness is now all about empowerment.
Meghan talking about how her fashion choices are linked to values and kidness.
And finishing with Meghan referring to her wedding and finally saying some words about Clare.

We learnt nothing at all about Clare or her achievements, what her career path has been, why did she deserve the prize this year and what makes her so good beyond some wishy washy words about her kindness – Frankly i doubt that anyone can become artistic director of Givenchy just by being kind.
Basically none of the stuff that we say when handing an award to someone.

Let’s be real, Meghan’s biggest accomplishment so far has been to marry a prince, Clare is a woman at the top of her profession. And in receiving her award Clare was more lavish in her praise towards Meghan than Meghan was towards her, and SHE was the one being rewarded!

As DoS, Meghan was always going to command media attention, but in her speech she choose to make it about herself, which was surprising given how gracious she has been in her speeches at the Hub. This was her friend’s moment on the biggest night of her career, and instead it ended up being Meghan’s night.

    • Rosie says:

MrsBump I like hearing your view on life. You often put into words something that is an idea at the back of my brain that frankly I don’t have the intelligence/eloquence to express. Else you give another view point and I learn something. I know plenty here won’t agree but I really enjoy your posts.

    • Lexa says:

@MRSBUMP I had the same reaction to her speech. She’s usually very thoughtful but I really think she should have stuck with CWK as her topic. The whole moment with her presenting felt a bit canned and the winner was immediately obvious.

    • Natalie S says:

I really like Meghan and I want to disagree with you but I can’t.

    • Herewegoagain says:

She has ALWAYS made her speeches about her. She has visited troops so knows what they are thinking and wanting (don’t get me started on celebrites and the military), she had to pay for her own college (which once again, she maybe only paid a portion).

    • KatieBo says:

I didn’t realise this until I read your post, but you’re absolutely right.
I will say, I think Meghan is missing the Hollywood life a bit and she’s enjoying that world again here.
In the Boomerang of her, Rosamund Pike and CWK you can see the sparkle in her eye- the camera-ready actress vibe. She’s in her element. And, dare I say it, enjoying that star-power that she hadn’t yet reached as an actress alone.

      • MrsBump says:

Very true. By marrying Harry she now has the acceptance of the highest echelons of the fashion and film world, which she couldn’t quite achieve on her own. However it is mostly her new position/status that they admire, as her personal achievements so far have been relatively modest, certainly less impressive than Clare’s for example.

She should watch out though as with that boomerang, she’s really blurring the line between royal and celebrity. I cant put my finger on it, but i think it’s over the shoulder look at the camera that seems overly hollywood.

    • Jegede says:

      Excellent points Mrs Bump.

      I didn’t even note that.

    • Tori says:

      Pretentious and self promoting!

    • Scotchy says:

      I totally agree!!

    • EllieMichelle says:

      Can’t say I disagree.

    • MrsBeast says:

^^^ This. +1 Mrs Bump. ALL the focus has gone off the designer and the event and onto Meghan and her belly. Meghan knew what she was doing and it was done on purpose. Regardless of whether it is her way of rebelling against the establishment, it was a crappy thing to do to the person being honored. I firmly believe Meghan has mastered PR and climbed her way to the top (not a bad thing) and last night it showed.

    • endoplasmic_ridiculum says:

Here here. She totally heisted the evening.

Don’t get me wrong – I find the RF in general to be lazy spongers and Meghan to be a hardworking, semi-talented, very attractive, individual by comparison. However, I do think she, like many actresses, probably has a strong streak of narcissism which probably exacerbates the issues with the RF, who are keen for her to fade into the backdrop.

Also – let’s be real – the fashion industry enslaves women more than it empowers them. What kind of kool-aid have they given us to drink lately?

Is everyone just using ‘The Beauty Myth’ as a coaster these days?

    • Princessk says:

Meghan’s appearance was always going to be the main story and overshadow everything even if she had not said a word. Regarding all of the references to herself l think it was an oblique way of referring to the hateful smear campaign of the past two weeks. Her speech, in a very gentle way, was defiant and boldly said l am not going anywhere l am here to stay. Meghan fights back. The recipient of the award gave a nice speech too, if anyone desperate to learn more about her. Who heard of her before Meghan anyway.

      • Herewegoagain says:

This was the wrong venue to “fight back”. It was supposed to honor her friend and she made it all about herself. Honestly, it was tacky AF.

      • MrsBump says:

        @princessk

For someone extolling the virtues of “values and kindness”, to then turn around and use her friend’s night to advance her own agenda and “fight back” as you say, is very low in my opinion, and frankly shows a lack of both values and kindness.
Also, you made not have heard of Clare before, but most of those invited that night to the BFA had. This was her night, and she showed a lot of graciousness towards Meghan, who’s primary accomplishment has been to get marrried.

      • PrincessK says:

@MrsBump…I respectfully disagree. I think you are exaggerating the extent to which Ms Clare was put in the shade by Meghan. Even if Meghan had had sellotape over her mouth and said nothing the news would have still been about Meghan. Which venue would have been the right venue to ‘fight back’? This was probably the best one, since she was among friends and people who also get vile abuse just for being in the public eye, and were hugely sympathetic to her..

I also think that the poem, ‘Our Deepest Fear’ which she read at the Memorial fund raiser had a hidden message too. Meghan is a first time vulnerable mother to be and this smear campaign has been the most brutal I have witnessed, so I can lay no blame at her door.

And as for saying that marriage to Harry is her primary accomplishment, well I think you need to know Meghan better. Meghan was accomplished and ambitious before Harry and would have had a successful life without him.

      • MrsBump says:

PrincessK – i know you are a huge fan and i respect that and it’s true that Meghan would have garnered media attention even if she hadn’t said a word, but despite knowing this, in her speech she went over and above and basically eclipsed her friend.

No one is talking about clare, all the coverage has been about Meghan and the baby bump cupping, i don’t agree with policing people’s bodies but i’ve genuinely never seen anybody stand on stage cupping their bump before for this long.

Of course meghan would have had a successful life without Harry (most of us not married to Harry also have successful lives without him 😉 ) but her achievements as an actress pales in comparison to that of the woman she was supposed to be celebrating yesterday. It takes enormous hard work, talent and determination to head a global brand like Givenchy.

So yes i was disappointed in her, especially since her personal brand is all about women empowerment.

As for “which venue would have been appropriate for her to push her agenda”, the answer is none, no matter how oblique her references are.
As a professional, she should know better than that, “never complain, never explain”. If that motto is good enough for the queen, it’s good for Meghan.

    • minny says:

You are absolutely right when focusing on what she said. However, PR/Communication is more than the words. Indeed, communication is 1st body/and facial expression, 2nd vocal tone and then the actual words spoken. So, she was communicating warmth, admiration, kindness, and fondness for Ms. Waite-Keller, IMO. Meghan was flexing that EQ. This is what I believe audience (s) heard including Ms. Waite-Keller even though it is not what she said. It is a master class in communication. And I’m here for it. She’s going to need it to deal with the RF.

  45. Jessica says:

The cupping controversy is weird and gross. Let her live. She looked like a goddess at this event. I hope she keeps holding her head high. Love the nail polish.

  46. Enn says:

She looks gorgeous! I love her accessories, dress, hair, all of it. Going to Google those bangles now…

  47. Tallia says:

I was guilty of constantly cupping and holding my tummy when I was preggo. Most of the time I did not even realize I was doing it. I did it from pretty much the moment we found out I was pregnant and when you are not showing? People thought I must have bad wind or an upset tummy. LOL

  48. Rosie says:

Never been pregnant but always thought it’s sweet when pregnant women touch their bump. Not so much when it’s during a posed photo, but when it’s a natural candid shot it’s quite nice.

  49. TheOriginalMia says:

Meghan looked gorgeous. Her speech not only honored Clare, but fashion and how it can empower a woman. Bravo! She can cup her body as many times and in whatever ways she wants. It’s her pregnancy and her body. Keep on living, Meghan. That’s the best ways to handle haters.

  50. Karen says:

Absolute perfection! Maybe the baby was kicking. When I was pregnant it happened often in the evening.

    • Thirsty Hirsty says:

…and there you go. When I was pregnant ( l-o-o-n-g time ago) I remember how disconcerting it was that the baby would start jumping up and down or doing somersaults, or practice his swim kicks …. always in the evening. I was less of a ‘cupper’ and more of a ‘stroker’ in an attempt to soothe. Maybe cause I have a chronic shoulder injury, so my arms wouldn’t work comfortably that way. She has strong, lovely arms that can reach for the full cup and soothe that baby….. lucky baby!

  51. Ladiabla says:

Just beautiful, love the bracelets. She looks fantastic and happy, eat it British press

  52. SlightlyAnonny says:

To paraphrase Big Freedia, “she did not come to play.” She looks gorgeous and happy and can touch her body and her baby as she pleases.

  53. Misty says:

She looks fabulous. I bet this was not an official event, therefore who the hell cares about the dark polish and even if it was official it’s such a minor thing to get all in a tizzy over.

I knew when I saw the pics that there would be a lot of judgment of how she holds her belly. 🙄

  54. Franny Days says:

All this talk of cupping and no one is talking about the size of her bump! I am due end of April and her bump is much bigger than mine and I am on my second pregnancy. If I had to guess she is due early to mid-March.

  55. Serphina says:

Well it was an apprarance for fashion, not a somber event or and event that needs “prim and proper” so tha nailpolish color is appropriate.

I think she really enjoys the playform she has been given and this is what is shaking up the RF. I would hate to see her over play her hand like Diana did. This is still The Firm. And i believe she is smart enough to know which battles to fight. And I am not speaking to nail polish color.

And maybe, just maybe, Kate may havr a bit of saltiness because not only has Megs taken to this like a duck to water, but she gets to do what she likes and Kate has never done so.

    • RealityLover says:

I think Meghan has already overstepped what the royals want, she and Harry have been spoken to, and she is being defiant, like with that Boomerang video. Can you imagine Princess Ann, or even Kate acting like MM did last night?
Meghan will lose, badly, if she takes on the royals, a very old, very hierarchical organization. She isn’t as smart as I thought she was.

      • Karen says:

What exactly did she do wrong?

The Queen is in her nineties. Charles will be King. Maybe some outdated rules can be modernized. I think Charles has really taken to Meghan.

      • Princessk says:

Did Meghan orchestrate the boomerang video? She had nothing to do with it.

  56. Nic919 says:

So I guess the British fashion industry considers Clare Waight Keller British enough to win the British fashion designer of the year award. I wonder if they have the same knowledge as the anonymous commenters who state otherwise.

  57. Case says:

She has always been stunning, and the pregnancy glow has only made her more beautiful. She looks awesome in this dress.

  58. Anitas says:

She looks great! I like the refreshing change from the usual bland beige royal styling (well, Kate’s).
Cupping is obviously a deliberate pose, like Angelina’s leg. But so what? I’m not bothered.

  59. Isa says:

Her face looks more like it did from before the wedding. She’s glowing.

As soon as I saw the photos I knew there would be cupping controversy.

  60. Who ARE these people? says:

What’s wrong with holding and supporting any part of your body that needs holding and support? Why is this “gross?” It’s like when we tried to make pregnancy disappear from the workplace, movies,TV as if it’s unsightly or obscene. Pregnancy is how we make new people. Her body, her choice.

    • Famika says:

IMO some just look then pick what will create a faux Meghan outrage.

If Kate did it, some of the same would say how sweet it was.

      Lol

      • SlightlyAnonny says:

This. Kate has done it with all three pregnancies and there are pics of it and no outrage because it seems to be a natural thing for pregnant women to do. It’s all faux outrage. They’re are people criticizing her hair for being so neat, who two weeks ago were criticizing it for being messy. I would tell these people to get a hobby but their hobby seems to be hating Meghan.

    • Erinn says:

I think it’s more about how awkward it looks to have one arm on top and one arm below. I don’t recall Kate doing a double cup like that – but I could be absolutely wrong. I think it’d look more ‘natural’ if both her hands were together and just under the bump, or resting kind of on top of it.

Not sure what you mean by making pregnancy disappear from movies and tv – do you mean when an actress is pregnant and the character is not? Because that only makes sense story wise. Otherwise I’m not sure what you mean.

    • Princessk says:

True. Also we know nothing about what has been happening with her pregnancy. Did she suffer morning sickness. ( l think she did. At the Well Child event I think she felt awful and Harry propelled her through it, frequently rubbing her back).

Woman who have risky pregnancies often feel vulnerable and want to ‘hold’ the baby in.

  61. Lexa says:

She looked beautiful last night—everything worked together very well!

  62. FredsMother says:

Meghan is radiant. Simply lovely. Unbothered by the daily gibberish.

Plus I love the cupping. It’s like she read all the belly-cupping nonsense and is sending a major ‘it’ s my prerogative’ to all the idiots. Cup away, Duchhess–hug that baby and give it plenty of love, security, and protection in the womb. All those who don’t like it can wait take a hike!

I can’t wait for Prince Harry to make his ‘cupping’ appearance. Lainey and all the other idiots’ heads can explode.

  63. Amelie says:

She looks so great and radiant here! That dress fits her like a glove. And she’s definitely deep into her second trimester. Yes it’s weird she held her belly for 4 straight minutes in an awkward way but for all we know maybe the baby was being super active and she was trying real hard to soothe the baby and focus on the task at hand as well. It’s just a weird thing to nitpick.

  64. Sheryl says:

So either she is way farther along than previously thought or she is going to be big!!!! Can hardly wait to see the belly cupp at 9 months – where do you put your hands then? I had two pregnancies and never belly cupped so I am inexperienced. Just wondering when you get really big where the bottom hand goes? Also wondering if perhaps this belly cupping is an African thing? I am European and of course we are very different with our emotions. I did notice that Beyonce belly cupped alot. Perhaps it is cultural?

    • MrsBump says:

      African? Huh?
No, beyonce and meghan are American.

      Signed,
An African. Says so my passport and everything

  65. Leyton says:

All of these complaints about Meghan doing what she pleases with her belly and body is so strange to me.

She’s simply cupping the baby growing in her stomach. She’s not touching YOUR stomach. She’s doing it to her own and honestly, I don’t see anything wrong with it and even if I did- ITS HER BELLY!

I’ve been around pregnant women who seem to forget they have a belly and others who are always rubbing and touching their bellys. It’s all up to the woman and what she feels is comfortable.

    Conversation Over.

I’m really sick of people policing women’s body. She’s not squeezing her own boobs on stage. She’s basically hugging her baby in the womb. Jesus, people stop trying to rain on someones parade. Meghan is clearly very excited and happy to be becoming a mother soon. She, and every other woman and their families, should be free to enjoy their pregnancy and the welcoming of a baby as they see fit. If that includes cupping her bump 24/7, then so be it.

  66. harla says:

I haven’t read the comments yet so forgive me if I repeat but I think the part of the reasoning behind the unannounced engagements is for security. Neo-Nazi’s have basically put a contract out on Harry for being a race traitor and that’s just a threat that the public has heard about, I can’t even imagine how many we haven’t. But I think in this instance, Meghan wanted to surprise Claire, Claire even mentioned seeing Meghan last week and was still unaware that she would be here tonight.

  67. Becca says:

She looks gorgeous! Lainey has a post about the over the top belly cupping and black nail polish being a giant FU to all the bad press she’s been getting. Interesting, no?!

    • Kebbie says:

I’m on board with Lainey’s theory. The cupping (more like hugging) is so over the top and twee, and if it’s just to piss off the royal courtiers or grab headlines, I love it. Less on board with her poses if they’re earnest because it’s not nearly as much fun lol

The DM is saying it’s encouraged in hypnobirthing classes, so maybe that’s what it was about. To me it looked deliberate, not like an unconscious thing.

      • OriginalLala says:

i actually love lainey’s theory and if its true, go Meghan! resist girl!

      • Becca says:

I agree, especially after reading Lainey’s analysis. Megan is an actress, after all 😉

      • Digital Unicorn says:

Am with Lainey not just on the belly cupping but the whole ‘revenge outfit’, she looked stunning and every inch the HW starlet – making Kate in her LK Bennet dress and sausage curls look like a dowdy middle aged housewife. I’m betting good money on Kate pulling something similar. Watch the video and you can see why she is a threat to the Cambridges – she gave a speech with ease and the audience loved her. Can you imagine Katie Keen doing that or even getting that kind or reception at an event – nope didn’t think you could.

Pity Harry isn’t President of BAFTA – Meghan could do so much for the British film industry.

      • Princessk says:

Yes, I too wish the Sussexes had the Bafta’s, rather than the dull Cambridge’s.

    • MrsBeast says:

I have to go read Laineys post but she certainly may be correct about that. A big F you to the establishment is VERY American of her and I am proud of her for doing it if thats the case. A mini American Revolution, part two!

      • Someone says:

Then she needed to stay american and not benefit from the royal family and establishment. It’s disloyal and treacherous to bite the hand that feeds you.

    • EllieMichelle says:

Lainey would have trashed anyone else but she made a conspiracy theory for Meghan. Maybe she’s excited to show off her bump, maybe she does it all the time, even when cameras are off or maybe there is an ulterior motive. Let the people cup! Obnoxious or not, it hurts no one.

    • endoplasmic_ridiculum says:

That Mulroney girl is probably holding Lainey to ransom somewhere in Toronto..

  68. Tanya says:

She can cup/clutch/hold her body as much as she desires. Get over yourselves. Also, she looks gorgeous and radiant. Love her look.

  69. sage says:

She’s glowing and looks unbothered…which will really anger her haters. 😎

  70. violet says:

Meghan and Kate both look so much better with the extra weight in their faces. I don’t see why science can’t come up with a way to save your face AND your backside.

I love the dress and I love her with her hair pulled back – I do hope we’ve seen the last of the tendrils for awhile. The extravagant double-cupping does seem a bit over the top and distracting.

Last, I do hope she’s not going to go back to blacks and neutrals all the time, she looked so great in the colors she wore on the tour. Sky blue and coral and cream all looked superb on her.

  71. Maria says:

All of the comments judging her harshly for touching her belly are gross and presumptuous. It is her belly. It’s her baby moving inside her. It’s her first pregnancy and she’s thrilled and likely fascinated by her growing belly. My first baby kicked and squirmed the most when I stood still and my hands went instinctively to my belly in a futile attempt to calm or reposition him. Seriously, people need to back off and let her be.

  72. Mego says:

Love how she holds her baby in utero – I think this baby is everything to her. I don’t believe she is doing this for show like others nor do I find it annoying.

  73. Iris says:

All the belly grabbing is tacky and fuels ridicule imo. She’s not gestating to the next Buddha. Strange that this is her hill to die when I don’t believe it will endear her to the Queen, but whatever, her choice.

  74. Rojas says:

    Keep seething Belly Cupper haters.

  75. K2Squared says:

    Just gorgeous!!

  76. KidV says:

I’m guessing Meghan isn’t aware that she’s cupping her belly so much. It’s just instinctive. It will be interesting to see she keeps doing it or if she’ll more aware once she sees the photos.

    She looks amazing.

  77. Rianic says:

Not to add to the rumor of twins, but during my twin pregnancy I held my belly that way to take some of the pressure off my back. My belly could get quite heavy if I stood a long time.

  78. Rosie says:

I love this outfit on her, the whole look. She knows her own hair but I’d love to see it more natural sometimes. I’ve no idea how permanent her straightening is, if it’s daily, weekly or a monthly treatment. It might be too difficult to do but I think she’d look beautiful with curlier hair. I’m prob a bit biased having big hair myself!! I see beautiful styles on WOC and I’m not just talking about weaves/straightened hair (least I don’t think I am). I’d be interested to hear from ladies who know this stuff, I’m probably talking nonsense. Maybe not just now but once things settle down I’d like her to be able to style herself in a way that maybe Hollywood wouldn’t let her.

    • Carey says:

Before her pregnancy she was likely getting a Brazilian blowout which involves heavy duty chemicals. Now it will be a blowout (maybe daily) followed with a flat iron and a silicone based product for smoothness and shine. It’s a lot of work to maintain. It also makes it harder to wear your hair unstraightened because if you’ve been straightening it for a while it takes time for your hair to recover and curl properly instead of frizzing.

    • Hotsauceinmybag says:

@Rose I want to say unfortunately based on how often she gets her hair treated with heat and probably a Brazilian Blowout, keratin, relaxers, etc. (before the pregnancy) that she has no curl pattern left at all 🙁

Based on the pictures I saw of Meghan in her youth she and I have very similar hair and I used to straighten my hair (we’re talking under a hair dryer and then a blow dryer for several hours, plus touch ups throughout the week) every week for years and years on end. I destroyed my curls (because society told me they were ugly and unkempt).

It took my about three years to finally get my curl pattern and fro back (YAY!) but it was a long road, required a lot of upkeep, experimenting and trial/error and on top of that my hair looked like $h1T during the transition period lol. I suspect that when her hair is wet and unstyled it’s probably quite stringy, slightly wavy and prone to breakage (as mine was, and still is in certain parts of my hair). It would not be difficult to do considering all the tools and resources she has at her disposal but it would certainly be a period of adjustment. I had no clue how to style my hair, tend to my hair when wet, dry, 3 days after I washed it, etc. There is a movement gaining tons of traction/followers by black women and afrolatina women to embrace their natural hair and styles (braids anyone) so that’s where I learned what I know now.

I would love to see her embrace her natural curl pattern and even tease it so it could become the absolutely massive pajón (Dominican Spanish for afro) that I know it has the potential to be – and could you imagine the shock from all the racists!!! Honestly, I’m a huge fan of Meghan, have followed her since she was on Suits but I do get the sense that she has no interest in embracing her hair, and if she did at all it’s been stamped out by the vitriolic, racist, sexist trolls/tabloids constantly ripping her apart using micro-aggressions or outright racist stereotypes and tropes.

      • Rosie says:

Thank you Carey & Hotsauce. I’m white with uncontrollable hair so I have a hint of an understanding. It does what IT wants! Congrats on getting your curl back HS. I love all the different styles and I’m glad the beauty industry hasn’t wiped out pride in natural hair for WOC. Its up to a woman how she wears her hair but it’s crap that someone might have to obliterate their natural hair for it to be considered beautiful. Is any race happy with itself? Skin lightening, hair straightening, squats or Brazilian bum lifts, lip fillers, extreme fake tanning, eye reshaping. We’re all trying to fake each others features. It’s bizarre when you think of it. I was proud of Doria at the wedding looking really elegant but looking like her best self not someone’s idea of MOB. You’re right about racist comments with Meghan. Sorry off on a tangent. 😊

      • intheknow says:

“she is not embracing her hair”…what a load of bollocks!! Do what you want with your hair and let her do the same. You nor anyone else doesn’t get to tell her HOW she should embrace her hair. Give it a rest.

      • Princessk says:

I would love to see Meghan with curls.

      • ROSIE says:

I asked the question, Hotsauce kindly replied. None of us said she HAD to embrace her natural curls. I think we all said it could look beautiful but that ultimately it’s her choice. None of it was a criticism of her just of the pressure WOC have felt over the generations to wear there hair according to western ideas of beauty.

      • Hotsauceinmybag says:

@Rosie, thank you! And you’re right about people always changing themselves to look like others, the grass is always greener and of course some people take it to an unnecessary level. Have you ever gone to a curly haircut specialist? I did that for the first time this summer and left in GOOD tears! I finally felt like I was wearing my hair instead of vice versa.

@intheknow, it wasn’t meant as a criticism, I meant to draw parallels between myself and Meghan feeling pressured to embrace our natural hair opposed to fitting into Eurocentric beauty standards. I guess that wasn’t clear to some! I’m traveling to Europe next week and planning on getting a Dominican blowout before that simply so my hair is more manageable (and will fit under a winter hat) so there’s no shade at WOC straightening their hair or doing whatever they please with it. That being said, I don’t know Meghan personally or professionally, but as someone who is deeply entrenched in the curly hair movement, I have met several of WoC who do not like natural hair, on themselves or others for whatever reason, and who prefer to go for a sleeker, straighter look. Some to the extent that they think natural hair looks “too black” or “too x” (plug in classic stereotype about textured hair). Meghan could or could not be one of those women. It is what it is.

  79. SpillDatT says:

Not touching the belly cupping controversy with a ten foot pole.

LOOK how good she looks when things actually FIT her!

Girl, please, please, please get a good tailor so you don’t look like a misshapen square all the time. Because even pregnant you look so much better when your clothes are not overwhelming your frame.

Love the gold bangles, goes great with the dress. Everything two thumbs up!

    • Rosie says:

YES, and I think like Kate she looks so much better with just that little extra weight. It’s not right to judge women’s weight but I do hope they can enjoy life and not feel the need to be the perfect weight for cameras.

  80. MeghanNotMarkle says:

She looks amazing. That is all.

  81. Janet says:

So…..if a woman wants to belly cupp it is her business. However, it does not look professional. With that said – The problem with Meghan giving the award and standing up there and belly cupping is that it took away the attention from the people that the attention should’ve been on. She needs to be more low-key. In the role of being a royal you are there to bring attention to other people and other charities etc. in this case it did exactly the opposite. She needs to learn to step back and make sure that she doesn’t do things that draw attention to her.i get that that is the complete opposite of Hollywood where the goal is to draw attention to your self but she needs to better understand her new role.

    • Iris says:

This is very insightful. This is exactly why it’s so tacky when she seems to keep the attention on herself. Her job is to use her attention to put the focus on others and worthwhile causes. The British public will quickly tire of someone perceived to be desperate for personal attention at the expense of worthy causes while on the taxpayer dime. It is a mistake if she doesn’t grow to understand British culture. This is not the USA and the same rules of celebrity do not apply.

    • Leyton says:

      Have you ever been pregnant?

It’s not a simple as keeping your hands glued to your side. When you have an actual being inside of you, moving , kicking, and punching, it can be uncomfortable and touching her stomach or cupping it can be used as a way to calm them down.

I don’t know how active Baby Sussex is but if they are very , Meghan probably uses it as a smoothing method. That and she just does it subconsciously. I’m not pregnant and I’ve had the habit of rubbing my own stomach to sooth myself.

    • MrsBump says:

      +1
I feel the same. She hasn’t really grasped the nuance of her new role as a Royal. Harry has chosen very well by marrying a woman comfortable in the limelight but now Meghan needs to learn to direct that spotlight onto others more deserving of it.
To give her the benefit of the doubt, I think that at the moment she is hogging the spotlight because she is desperate to prove herself, so she’s going overboard. Once she has relaxed into the role, she’ll learn when to let others have their moment. In fairness though, when out with the other royals, especially will & kate, she is very self effacing, but in solo outings, like today’s she clearly thrives on the attention.

      • liriel says:

This. I love your comments because they’re reasonable. She clearly loves the attention and can use it to her advantage but I do wonder if the senior royals are probably at least a bit scared. A new Diana was the last thing they needed, that’s why I think they approved Kate, who was non threatening.

      • arsesds73 says:

You also have to keep in mind, the media is doing her no favors in taking the spotlight away from her. Of course she’s going to get this amount of attention after all the negative headlines and sexist/racist articles that came out. What got the most attention was the fact that she looked happy despite all the criticism that was thrown towards her. Do I think she’ll continue to do this in the future? No. If she truly wanted the spotlight she would be out and about regardless of what the other royals are doing and when. After the 16 week tour, Harry and Meghan have stayed very much under the radar so that they Cambridges can have their turn in the limelight. It was the tabloids that put her back in the it only to degrade her at every level. She’s a hollywood interloper, the new Wallis Simpson. Who wouldn’t want to prove themself after these nasty attacks directed at them? I am not even Meghan, but I felt sick to my stomach reading some of the stuff that came out – can you imagine what Meghan went through those two weeks? On top of that – the girl is pregnant. They find anything and everything to criticize her. Also this narrative of her thriving on attention is undeserved – her very first solo outing at the Oceania tour exhibit was nothing like that at all. They treat her like she’s going to be queen when she’s not. Harry is no longer the spare either. The heirs – William and Kate are following the rules set out by the establishment and are doing it to a tee. I love H&M but I know at some point they will eventually fade into the background as the Cambridge kids grow up. It seems the people around the heirs, or the heirs themselves are the ones upset about the attention Harry and Meghan are getting. They are the ones looking for it instead.

Indeed it could be the negative feedback which makes her so desperate to prove herself but in my opinion, its akin to adding fuel to the fire.
I know many here disagreed with Michelle Obama’s advice to take a step back but it’s an advice that’s worth its weight in gold. It shows MO experience and maturity in dealing with surreal situations, unfamiliar surroundings, and a hostile press, especially as she too acquired her role by virtue of her spouse. It’s a very unique position to be in and Meghan would do well to listen to her.

@MrsBump. That’s the thing though, they have stepped back, especially after the tour. They only had a few appearances and for the most part have been working behind the scenes. We heard nothing from them, even the RRs were saying she’s taking time and being careful about which patronages she’s choosing. Here’s what I am taking from it – if it was just one or two articles that said she’s demanding and working too much and that she has to slow down – I would understand that and would advise Meghan that “yeah maybe take it slow, you are also pregnant” fine. But the leaks that came from the courtiers were beyond that demanding narrative – they were racist and sexist, its almost like they are trying to drive her out of the family. The next one was a threat – don’t fight back with a tit for tat because look what happened to Diana because of that. That’s what was infuriating, they decided to go very low to bring her down. So unfortunately, our opinions differ and I respect yours, but I can’t fault Meghan for trying to fight back without going to the press.

Thanks for the shiny pics. So gorgeous and classic. #armenvy Now I wish I could go back in time and give an award to my dress designer – ha ha. She wasn’t a big name designer like this, but she was amazing.

p.s. I’m kind of liking the unannounced appearances.

  83. Digital Unicorn says:

She looked great – the dress was fabulous on her and the minimal styling and swept back hair was all on point. Not a lace or Disney Princess frock in sight.

Its interesting that William turned up to today’s event to ‘support’ Kate with her new patronage, don’t recall him doing that before – cosplaying Harry supporting Meghan and her cookbook launch, hmm.

    • Mego says:

Yeah I noticed that as well. They seem to be much more team oriented now which after 7 years is odd.

  84. Belle says:

Whether you love her or not, or love belly-cupping or not, Meghan is clearly using “Instagram-like” pregnancy poses at this event (and many others.) She chooses to pose this way, as is her prerogative, and I’m sure she has her reasons for doing so. That being said, there are people who dislike the contrived cupping/cradling poses. They are entitled to voice their opinions and she is entitled to ignore them.

I agree with posters above who point out that the cupping can draw attention to her, sometimes inappropriately.

  85. Katebush says:

She looks amazing here love a velvet dress.
Her face is glowing and she has great arms .most of all she looks happy and confident.. I’m glad she’s not letting the negative press get to her.

I don’t like the cupping though it’s comes across as OTT and put on.. maybe one r but both? For four minutes? On stage? Just kinda weird to me…

  86. incognito08 says:

I am so over the faux outrage from folks concerning Meghan’s double-bump cupping. Can’t she live? Dang!! I have never been pregnant; however, I imagine I too would be “handsy” with my growing tummy because there is a likelihood that I would be in awe of the life forming inside of me. Like, “I can’t believe that I did this!” I think Meghan couples her bump for that reason combined with desiring to feel more secure and needing to do something with her hands. Prince Harry fulfills this need when he holds her hands during engagements. My unsolicited advice to Meghan is, “Do you and cradle your belly to your heart’s content!”

  87. Flowers says:

    the bump clutching is odd.

  88. Vanessa says:

The faux outrage over meghan cupping is ridiculously its like the people who swore that she couldn’t get pregnant at all natural its just away for people to be petty. You would think that other grown adult woman would know better then to police another woman about her body When kate cupped her belly no one said anything it was thought as cute and adorable but meghan cupped her belly it is seen as attention seeking and tacky.

  89. liriel says:

I don’t know what to think about this issue. I think she looks fine, she is a bit too actressy for me but it’s just my personal taste. It’s like in Spain you have less personal space, you hug people you meet. Do that in Sweden and you’d be frown upon.

  90. greyate says:

Annoyed at the belly remarks, I wandered over to Lainey and found the video.

    Wow. Wow. Wow.

Duchess Meghan was a glowing gorgeous and an amazingly articulate and easygoing public speaker. To walk into this elaborate event as a surprise and talk in front of all those celebrities like she’s been doing it her whole life, I was impressed. The British designer was speechless at first, touched and surprised. How was even this pulled off?

I have a daughter but have never been pregnant. All the reports about cupping because the baby was kicking, look spot on to me. Junior was having a ball!

  91. 2020 says:

Last time I checked it’s her body and can do whatever she wants with it..

People need to get a life

    If you feel
Uncomfortable with her touching her own stomach? Something is wrong with you..

    • 2020 says:

      OMG 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 hilarious

    • Nana says:

Exactly. I don’t see any other stories, anywhere else on any media platform, analysing, interpreting, deconstructing, criticising, tearing apart the way any public figure anywhere in the world, chooses to stand and where to put their hands.

Seemingly it’s only Meghan who has to apologise for her very presence – as though she needs the average pleb’s permission for taking up space and for how she moves in that space? Wtf have we become as a society??

  92. RedWeatherTiger says:

Has anyone noted that Rosamund Pike looks like she has lost her third dimension?

  93. SDuff says:

Let’s presume Meghan knows people will comment on her “belly cupping”. If we agree she’s PR savvy, why is she doing it? Let’s also presume she could have restrained herself during her time on stage had she chosen.

  94. Meg says:

I LOVE her look here-slicked back hair, one shoulder dress, the dark nails, gold bracelet-

  95. Princessk says:

Apparently Clare Weller was with Meghan just last week (possibly to do with an outfit), and so Clare was utterly surprised to see Meghan there and get the award.

  96. Hmm says:

While funny, she looks well put together and beautiful.

  97. ROSIE says:

PrincessK – yes the Daily Mail is pure poison but the online version is an international ‘paoer’ not UK whereas the paper is aimed at the UK market. A lot of the online articles are aimed at the US and AUS markets and a lot of the commentators are outside of the UK. I’m not saying some Brits don’t think like that. Obviously there are extremists coming out of the woodwork. I’m just fed up with the narrative that ALL Brits are racist, ALL Brits hate Meghan and that the DM and Sun represent us. It’s a sweeping generalisation and we’re intelligent women here, were better than that. x

  98. A says:

Honestly…this is gonna sound really dumb, but I kind of get the belly cupping. I’ve never been pregnant myself, but it’s got to be weird to have your belly sticking out so much like that. Especially if it’s late in the pregnancy and your baby is starting to move around. I’d probably keep my arms around my belly too. And Meghan is really petite, so I’m guessing it’s a really different experience for her, hence the reason why she’s doing it.

I guess some women don’t really feel the need. Depends on the person.

  99. Olenna says:

Forget the petty cupping criticism. The obvious backhanded compliments, dissertation-like over-analysis of Meghan’s behavior, and the deliberate blurring of fact and rumor here is just ridiculous. It’s clear to me that Meghan is occupying a permanent place in some people’s heads and envy is a helluva drug.

  100. Meg says:

don’t photographers yell at you to touch your belly when being photographed? I realize she was in front of a crowd not photographers but she was an actor and realizes what looks good, also people are happy she’s pregnant and want to see her growing bump I feel like her black dress from the front really camouflaged it in certain photos. people are happy to share in their growing family and she understands that’s part of her public role, I don’t’ think this is excessive or too much. again we’re body policing women,. if she wants to touch her belly or not its her choice.
