How Do You Choose the Right Colors For Your Custom Home?

Custom Home

Designing your own custom home gives you the ability to get creative and that means choosing the right color scheme.

Sometimes people like to switch up the colors of their home fairly regularly to keep their space feeling fresh and new. Others, though, find this process to be a hassle—and when they pick with a color, they intend to live with it. Choosing the paint color for your custom home is all a matter of preference, just as many things with the custom home building process are, but there are a few guidelines you can follow to help make the process easier and afford you some inspiration.

Using a Color Wheel

See how colors go with one another and try to come up with something that’s harmonious. Typical complementary color schemes utilize colors that are opposite of one another on a color wheel, such as a warm color and a cool color, like yellow and blue. You can also opt for an analogous color scheme that uses colors next to each other, such as red and orange, and different varying shades of those colors. Once you know what your overall scheme will be, you can start to build a palette of specific options.

Look at Trends

Just like many aspects of custom home design, different colors come in and out of fashion pretty regularly. Poke around and see what’s trending to get an idea of how to really modernize your home. In 2018, some of the trending color options include onyx, ultra violet, and generally striking a bold, modern contrast. Bright reds make for some awesome accents when set against a much more tame background color.

Matched to Your Fashion

Think about what you already own, as these are often indicators of what kinds of colors you enjoy. Your wardrobe is a good indicator of what your color preferences may be. If you usually wear softer, neutral colors, that’s always a good option for interior walls. However, if you tend to dress more vibrantly, that may not be suitable for your walls. You also want to look at your furniture and artwork. If you can get it to fit in with your walls and have a complete look, that’s the best route to take.
