A Utah-based company is recalling its cat food product because it may be contaminated with Salmonella.

Go Raw, LLC of Cottonwood, Utah, is recalling its 2 lbs. frozen bags of "Quest Beef Cat Food" because of a possible Salmonella contamination, according to the Food & Drug Administration.

The recall was initiated after the company was notified by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture when a sample was collected and tested for the bacteria. The affected products were nationally distributed through retail stores and are identified with the following code: UPC 6-91730-17101-8, Lot N128.

According to the FDA, the company did conduct its own test, which returned negative results. The contamination is not evenly distributed throughout a lot, which is why it could have been found in a small sample that Minnesota's Department of Agriculture took.

Because of their commitment to safety and quality, Go Raw, LLC is conducting a voluntary recall of the product and consumers are advised to follow the handling tips on the packaging when disposing of it.

The FDA states that pets infected with Salmonella may be lethargic and have the following symptoms:

  • Diarrhea, bloody diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Decreased appetite
  • Abdominal pain

Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and spread the disease to other animals and even humans. According to the FDA, humans can exhibit the same symptoms as pets. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, such as arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms.

If you or your pet are experiencing any of these symptoms after being in contact with the product, please contact your healthcare provider or veterinarian.
