How many social media sites are there? Depending on what you count as a social media site, there are actually upwards of 1800 different social media sites drawing millions of niche and general users to them every day. There is a lot of debate over what is or is not a social media site, but by general terms they all effectively apply, just under different niches.

Obviously the top names we can pretty much take for granted: FaceBook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube, but how well do you know the others?

 Let’s take this test.

Section A: For each of the following names of social media sites that you have used at least once, you earn one point. Keep track and check your score at the end:

Digg, StumbleUpon, Flickr, Pintrest, Delicious, Tumblr, Plaxo, PhotoBucket, Naymz, Branchout, BeKnown.

Section B: For each of the following names of social media sites that you have actually used at least once, you earn 2 points!

Vimeo, UStream, Ecademy, Xing, Reddit, Technorati, Revver, Veoh, Metacafe, Viddler.

And finally, Section C: For each of the following social media that you have actually used at least once, you earn 3 points!

Tout, Blip, Plancast, Orkut, Hi5, SecondLife, 43 Things, Sokule, Rojo, Slashdot.

Scores: 0 – You may want to check out the thing called the Internet some day. I hear it’s the next “big thing.” 1-5 Ok, so you’ve dipped your little toe in the waters; now it’s time to jump in and see what you’re really missing. 6-10 This isn’t your first rodeo, Cowboy, but you have a lot of work to do to last ‘the full 8 seconds.’ 11-15 You know your way around and probably own an iPhone. 16-20 You do this for a living. 21-30 Companies should probably hire you to help them get up to speed; you speak the language, know some of the key players, and have enough experience to get them in the game. 31-45 You don’t just own an iPhone, you own the whole iFamily, have multiple Android devices and code apps in your spare time between posting crafts on Etsy, don’t you? 46-60 You are part of the top 0.1% of the world in your social media awareness and companies better start paying attention to what you have to say about their brands in those media.

  1. The list is good. There are a lot of more upcoming ones in the field of music like thisismyjam (still in beta), spotify, soundcloud and lots more. Also, there are a few geography specific social networking websites especially in places where facebook and twitter are blocker like Sina Weibo in China which is very popular in the area and is also expanding its market to other countries in the Far East.

  2. Those are some great examples! Thanks for sharing them. We tried to keep these largely general content or business oriented for the North American market, but your comment really demonstrates our point – there are so many social media out there that people are really connecting to, so businesses and business professionals should really start looking at their overall social media strategy, not just how they plan to dominate Twitter for 2.2 seconds.

Of course, it wouldn’t hurt for people to engage in social media just to be social, either! 🙂

    Thanks for chiming in!

  3. After reading your blog post I browsed your website a bit and noticed you aren’t ranking nearly as well in Google as you could be. I possess a handful of blogs myself and I think you should take a look here: http://seopressors.org You’ll find it’s a very nice tool that can bring you a lot more visitors. Keep up the quality posts
