Best of the Week for October 2

In Best of the Week we link to a handful of the best articles, videos, books, etc. that we have come across in the last week. We hope this will point you to some of the right places and give you gospel-rich tools and thoughts for life and mission.

5 Ways to Murder Your Marriage

“You might be surprised by how effortless the whole thing can be. In less than 12 months, and in just five easy steps, you too can kill a marriage. Here’s how.”

This is satire. Hopefully that’s obvious. But it’s good. Read it thoughtfully and closely guard your marriage, especially on the hard days or in the hard seasons.

Voices That Shape Us: The Importance of Mentors

“The greatest part of mentoring doesn’t seem like mentoring at all, just like friendship. Peter, James, and John probably didn’t say to themselves while walking to Gethsemene, ‘Here we go, boys. This is going to be the Gospel of Mark, chapter fourteen.’ They thought it was just a walk.”

This is a helpful perspective on mentoring. What we’re often looking for just isn’t realistic, and to be honest, it’s not the best reflection of what a strong mentor-learner relationship looks like. It looks a lot more like real life than we think.

Let’s Get Real About Women’s Discipleship

“If you want to develop a rhythm of discipling others and being discipled, you are also going to have to embrace the messiness of life, and that often means organized study sessions take a backseat. You will have to talk over screaming kids. You will have women flake out because of other responsibilities. You will often talk about scripture while one of you folds laundry or finishes up a work project.”

Staying on the theme of mentoring as life-on-life. I love a good, pointed, humble “Let’s get real about…” Well, here you go. You could make a few small changes and directly apply this to men, as well, so guys, take note.

On Daughters and Dating: How to Intimidate Suitors

“Instead of intimidating all your daughter’s potential suitors, raise a daughter who intimidates them just fine on her own. Because you know what’s intimidating? Strength and dignity. Deep faith. Self-assuredness. Wisdom. Kindness. Humility. Industriousness. Those are the bricks that build the wall that withstands the advances of Slouchy-Pants, whether you ever show up with your Winchester locked and loaded or not.”

I love Jen Wilkin and recommend almost anything she writes. And I say “almost” just because I haven’t read everything she’s written. This is a GREAT charge to the parents of daughters, especially dads. Your job is WAY more than to brandish a shotgun. Don’t let it get to that. (But it’s still nice for Slouchy-Pants to know what’s up.)

The Golden Rule in Bible Reading

“The goal of Christian Bible reading is simple. When you read, you should be trying to find what the inspired author intended to communicate by what he wrote.” Check it out…
