president's message

Dear AATM Members,

What do math teachers do on Thanksgiving?  Count their blessings!  We at AATM count YOU as one of our blessings.  We are thankful for you, that you do the difficult, rewarding, frustrating, joy-filled, thankless, inspiring work of teaching Arizona’s children.  We are thankful that you became a member of this organization.  The work we do is for you, to support you, to empower you because Empowered Teachers Make a Difference.  In this newsletter you will find some useful NCTM resources, information about the Arizona STEM Education Collaborative, November Mathgazine, upcoming dates and even someThanksgiving math jokes.

In appreciation of your dedication to the mathematics education of Arizona students,

Amy D. Rushall, President

Arizona Association of Teachers of Mathematics

Developing a Reading Habit: Preparing for and Contributing to a Research Community

Sandra Crespo, Kristen Bieda, and Christopher Dubbs

A serious problem for the field is the ever-increasing workload demands that leave us with much less time to read and keep up with the published works in our scholarly community, particularly works that push us beyond our boundaries and help our field evolve. A common challenge of writing for publication that is particularly challenging to prospective authors of the MTE journal is that of situating and making explicit the contributions a manuscript makes to ongoing conversations in the field and to the relevant research literature.
