Woman's Dress: Bodice and Skirt

Spring 1948
Designed by Christian Dior (French, 1905–1957) Label Christian Dior, Paris (founded 1946) Worn by Dora Donner Ide (Mrs. John Jay Ide) (American, 1916–1998)
Rounded shoulders, small waist, full hips, and long, full skirt—this pale pink two-piece dress epitomizes Christian Dior’s revolutionary "New Look" that redefined high fashion’s feminine ideal. To emphasize his new shape, the shirt has diagonal shoulder seams and stiffened tails that tuck in, while the skirt has a stiff lining and bands of topstitching. Dior presented this model, along with 142 other ensembles, at his third couture show. Women’s Wear Daily hailed his haute couture collection as "modern and wearable . . . geared to the active life of today."
