Your own personal watch owl: Cute security camera protects your home from thieves by streaming live footage to your phone

  • Ulo has two LCD screens, or eyes to communicate and watch activity
  • If out of Wi-Fi network, it will record gifs of activity and email them to
  • Kickstarter goal was $158,000 and it has raised more than $1.5 million

Owls can turn their heads 270 degrees, which allows them to see almost everything around them.

A French designer used this wise bird's image to create an interactive home monitoring system that can be used from anywhere in the world.

Ulo is a cute, owl-like surveillance camera that connects to a mobile phone and communicates with eye expressions.

HOW SECURE IS ULO?

Ulo only stores a few minutes of video locally. Nothing is sent over a distant third party server.

Think of Ulo as your own personal server, so there are no extra fees.

The owl only sends data to your secure devices when needed. Each device has its own password + a second step authentification.

The setup is easy, a QR code is generated when your device connects for the first time. You just have to show this code to Ulo.

You'll have to renew this operation every 6 months.

A detailed user guide is included in the box and video tutorials will be available online.

'Eye expressions are an efficient, natural and universal way to connect instantly with Ulo,' said Vivien Muller, inventor and designer of the gadget.

'No logos or icons are displayed on the screens, but you instantly know what Ulo has in mind.'

The device has a two-way mirror that looks like a beak and covers Ulo's night-vision equipped camera and built-in motion sensor.

It uses two large LCD screens, or its eyes, to express what its thinking and what it would like to tell you.

The color, shape and size of Ulo's eyes can be customized through the company's website and mobile app.

If Ulo looks sleepy, it means the battery is low, at under 10 per cent.

It will blink when someone takes a picture from the app and its eyes will follow something that is moving.

And if someone is watching a live video stream, it will squint to get a better look.

The device is also waterproof, which means it can be used outside within reasonable temperatures of 14 degrees Fahrenheit to 122 degrees Fahrenheit.

The camera is activated by giving Ulo a soft tap on the forehead and the rechargeable battery will last up to a week.

If you plan being without Wi-Fi, simply double tap its forehead, this activates the Alert Mode.

Once the smartphone leaves the network, every moment will be recorded into an animated gif and sent to your email.

Alert Mod will then disengage when you are back in a Wi-Fi network.

'It is a very simple way to check what is going on in another room or when you're away,' said Muller,

'Ulo streams directly using video and audio on a secure webpage or mobile apps.'

'This feature is perfect to use Ulo as a baby cam.'

'It captures snapshots on demand and sends it on a secure webpage, your dropbox account or directly on your email.'

Ulo is also compatiable with IFTT, which allows other connected devices or internet services to trigger certain functions.

For example, if it starts raining outside Ulo will display a grumpy face or if there is a birthday in your calander it will have happy expression and if there's too much pollen in the air Ulo's eyes will turn red.

Ulo set out to raise $158,000 on Kickstarter, but has already surpassed $1.5 million and the campaign still has two more days to go.

Units of the camera, priced at $110 (£72) are expected to ship to backers in the beginning of November 2016.
