Water On The Knee | Edema: Causes, Symptoms And Natural Treatment

By Patricia | January 22, 2010

Water in the knee is a problem that is more accurately called in medical terms as an edema – the general term that is used for swelling. The simplest manifestation of swelling is an accumulation of fluid in the tissues when sitting for a long time or when suffering from diabetes or hypertension. This is a lymphedema that also gives an indication of the system that is affected. To understand why this happens, you have to understand the lymphatic system.

Causes

The lymphatic system is a filtration system that has a network of vessels just like the vascular system that transports blood. These vessels lie alongside the arteries and veins. No blood vessel is completely sealed and because of the pressure of blood hitting vessels as they narrow, some of the lighter contents of the blood like nutrients are sieved out of the blood. This fluid is then taken up by the lymphatic vessel and sent to the lymph nodes that use the abilities of T-cells and macrophages to filter and remove impurities. The lymph is the resent into the blood vessels by the reverse of the process.

Things can go wrong because of diabetes and hypertension or even remaining seated for a long time. The pressure of the blood increases to such a level that more is forced out by hydrostatic pressure than is returned through osmosis. This causes the fluid to accumulate in the tissues and cause conditions like water on the knee. Relieving yourself of this problem first requires that you reduce the amount of salt intake. As this reduces, the need for more water to support stasis is also reduced, therefore the volume of blood, and therefore the blood pressure. Additionally, for quick relief, you need to simply lie down and then elevate the leg above the level of your heart and this will drain fluids back into your body.

Natural Treatment For Edema

Some of the treatments that you can use for hypertension are ACE inhibitors. These work by disrupting a system in the body called the Renin Angiotensin Aldesterone system. This system regulates the amount of sodium in your body. Garlic is known to have antihypertensive properties and to that effect, it should be consumed. Compressing the area is also one of the things that you can do. There are readymade compression bandages that will ensure that no one has to end up suffering from edema from just sitting in one place.
