NDP calls for study on guaranteed minimum income

New Democrats will present a motion calling on the Standing Committee on Finance to undertake a study on guaranteed minimum income. Finance critic Guy Caron (Rimouski-Neigette—Témiscouata—Les Basques) says a study is necessary because it’s a complex policy that could be a possible solution to growing income inequality.

“For several months now, we’ve seen a growing interest in a guaranteed minimum income,” said Caron. “As parliamentarians, it’s our duty to study the benefits and impacts this policy could have on our system.”

Guaranteed minimum income essentially aims to provide every individual with a basic income regardless of their employment status. It can take many different forms and would require a transformation of government programs. This policy deserves to be studied objectively.

That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee undertake a study of the benefits and impacts of a guaranteed minimum income system and report its recommendations to the House.
