As the hot spring day turned to a cooler dusk, fans came pouring in to see Vance Joy Tuesday at the historic Plaza Theatre in Downtown El Paso.

From the first rising curtain bearing the silhouette of the Australian folk-pop singer to the last set, the packed Plaza crowd mouthed the lyrics and danced next to their seats for the entire 90-minute show.

Joy, for his part, smirked with gratitude while playing every song with pristine precision on his guitar chords and with his differentiating pitch.

"(His) energy was really good, and 'Riptide' was my alarm clock for a while," said Jane Squib, who drove from Albuquerque with her friend to see his show.

'Riptide' was Joy's first big hit, and brought cheers and screams for Joy, on the seventh stop of his 'Nation of Two' tour.

"My mom inspires my music, and I have to give her credit at some point," Joy said with a laugh during his concert.

He sometimes gets song ideas when he talks to his mom, he explained.
