A perfect picnic or camping snack, apple chips are the sweet treat we could snack on for hours. While they tend to be a tad on the pricey side at the store, these chips are actually surprisingly easy to make at home. All you need are 3 ingredients and an oven or air fryer to make crispy apple chips right at home—no dehydrator needed. Here’s everything you need to know about making this fall pick-me-up in your own kitchen:
The best apples for apple chips:
When it comes to making apple chips, pick a type of apple on the crisper side to make these, like Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Pink Lady. Avoid softer, mealier apples like Red Delicious or Fuji—they just won’t crisp up the same way.
How to make crispy apple chips:
Besides choosing crispier apples, our top tip for achieving crispy apple chips is to slice ‘em real thin. Slice the apples as thinly as you can into rounds, around 1/8" thick. We like using a mandoline to get thin and even slices, just use caution. If you don't have a mandoline, use the sharpest knife you have and (carefully) slice as thin of slices as possible. The thinner the slice, the better the crisp.
Dehydrate your apples:
No fancy dehydrator needed for this recipe—you can use your oven or air fryer to make these chips. We’ve included instructions for both, but we highly recommend using your air fryer if you’ve got one. The chips will crisp up in much less time than your oven (12 minutes vs. 2-3 hours). That being said, your oven will work just fine with these chips if you’ve got the time!
Storage.
Once made, store your apple chips in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
