Topic: Modernization of the River Management Operations at the Tennessee Valley Authority

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) controls a system of 49 reservoirs over a watershed spanning seven states and more than 40,000 mi2.  TVA manages the river system using a complex set of models for forecasting inflows, operating reservoirs under competing goals, evaluating hydraulic conditions, minimizing the cost of producing electricity, and meeting water temperature constraints near nuclear and coal-fired power plants.  Their river management goals are to prevent floods, generate reliable electricity, and promote economic activity – all while operating under federal rules and regulations.

TVA is currently modernizing its operations by implementing advanced river models and modeling systems, updating its Emergency Action Plans related to dam safety, and is working to better quantify risks throughout the river system and move toward risk-informed decision making across the River Management, Dam Safety, and Nuclear Power groups at TVA.  This talk will provide an overview of the modernization of water resources-related systems at TVA and provide insights into the process and benefits of the work.

Presenter:

Michael Kane P.E. CFM

Michael Kane is the Director of Fort Collins Operations at Riverside Technology, inc. As a Senior Water Resources Engineer and Project Manager at Riverside, Mr. Kane specializes in the development and implementation of real-time river forecasting and decision support for water resources systems.
