Community comes together for Special Olympics Maine Bocce Tournament

PORTLAND (WGME) -- Special Olympians were busy today making a difference in the community at the 5th annual Special Olympics Maine Bocce Tournament.

More than 100 athletes came together today at Unum's Portland campus to put their bocce skills to the test.

Proceeds from the tournament support local organizations and programs that focus on improving health and quality of life for everyone.

And for the athletes, it’s just plain fun. Special Olympian, Cassie Hebert said, "I like to roll the ball and enjoy my time with my friends."

Unum Community Relations Specialist, Steve Alpren said, “It's just a great way to support a great organization. We really enjoy it a lot. It's not only important to the athletes, but it’s as equally important to the 40 volunteers behind us that are taking their time to help out."

Maine Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
