Where Language Divides, Love Speaks (by Kaitlyn Black)

Going to Mexico I wasn’t really sure what to expect, and I guess you could say I was a little nervous. I don’t know even the slightest bit of Spanish, and I kind of questioned and doubted myself… wondering how I would make an impact on people and show them Christ’s love, when I couldn’t even have a conversation with them. But I quickly realized, that this concept was completely wrong.

From the first day we got there, I felt welcomed in every room I stepped foot into. Even though they may not have known me, and couldn’t speak my language… they made me feel like I was a part of their family. In 1 John 3:18, it says: “Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” They showed me how to put this verse into action. This was a new experience for me. There hasn’t been many times in my life that I walked into a room of strangers, that welcomed me like they had known me my whole life.

It made me reevaluate my own life, and think of how I definitely didn’t live like this. A verse that I have been thinking about a lot lately is Galatians 5:13-14: You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” I saw these verses come to life through the Mexican people, they truly serve and love others.

I am so incredibly thankful, that I had the opportunity to live in Mexico for a week. It was a life changing experience for me, and I can only hope to live like they do. To fully love others, and be such a humble servant.

Kaitlyn came down to Ixtapaluca with a great group of kids (and kids at heart) from Hope Community Church for a week of fun and ministry from July 29-August 6. She is a wonderful young lady. Kaitlyn’s dad Patrick is a pastor at Elizabethtown Grace Brethren Church, also one of our supporting churches.
