Brits looking for a cheap Easter break in Europe should head to Budapest where their pound stretches further.

For the Hungarian capital is the best value for money as a day out with travel, food and drink costs £28.11 - almost half the price of Barcelona or Rome.

Research by currency exchange firm Caxton FX found a glass of wine in the picturesque city is £1.75, compared to a hefty £4.73 in the Italian capital and £2.37 in the Catalan city.

And it has bargain Big Macs for £2, reasonable day travel cards costing £4.12 and taxi rides that rack up a £16.24 bill for a half hour journey.

By comparison, a day in Rome would set Brits back £50.48 for the cost of a travel card is £5.52, a Big Mac is £3.17, a 30 minute cab journey a wallet busting £31.54 and museum entry £5.52.

With sterling getting a pounding against the euro, popular Eurozone destinations including Madrid, Berlin and Amsterdam are all proving expensive this year.

But holiday money goes further in Budapest and Prague, the study found.

Rupert Lee-Browne, founder of Caxton FX said: “The cost of a short break can vary widely once you factor in the cost of food, drink and local travel, and so it’s best to research these before you go.

“In recent weeks the pound has weakened against the Euro and so popular Eurozone destinations are not as affordable as they were last Easter.”

The survey of five typical tourist buys - a glass of wine, Big Mac, day travel card, museum pass and half hour taxi ride - across 20 cities found Amsterdam, Venice and Stockholm were dearer than New York for a day out.
