Netflix is making another big play for anime eyeballs with its latest original acquisition, securing global rights to Production I.G and Kazuto Nakazawa’s forthcoming Perfect Bones.
It’s not the first anime project for the streamer, though it does mark the first time such a series has gotten a worldwide rollout in the all-at-once model. Each of the 12 episodes will get a day-and-date release in Netflix’s 190 countries.
“We are incredibly excited to work with Production I.G, who have worked on hit series such as Attack on Titan and Psycho-Pass, in bringing one of the most daring new anime titles produced today to all Netflix members and anime fans around the world,” Netflix original content acquisition vp Erik Barmack said in a statement. “In an era where the Internet knows no bounds, we are proud to deliver high-quality original anime to fans all over the world, at the exact same time, no matter where they live, whether it be Japan, France, Mexico, the U.S. and beyond.”
Perfect Bones is set in a future where genetic testing leads scientists to create “perfect humans,” only to have their living research kidnapped by an organization set on using them to further a plot for new world order.
“Among all the TV series and films Netflix offers, the titles I personally find the most amazing are Netflix originals,” said Production I.G president-CEO Mitsuhisa Ishikawa. “Production I.G is eager to present another impactful title brought through our creators’ passion and imagination. We’re very excited about Perfect Bones.”
Nakazawa, a prolific anime director and designer, might be best recognized in the U.S. for his work on the anime sequence in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill Volume 1.
