Biodiversity 2037

Launched in 2017, Protecting Victoria’s Environment – Biodiversity 2037 (Biodiversity 2037) presents a long-term vision for Victoria’s biodiversity supported by two overarching goals:

  • Victorians value nature, and
  • Victoria's natural environment is healthy.

Coupled with reviews of the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988 and native vegetation clearing regulations, Protecting Victoria’s Environment – Biodiversity 2037 ensures that Victoria has a modern and effective approach to protecting and managing our precious natural environment.

What is biodiversity?

Biodiversity is all components of the living world: the number and variety of native plants, animals and other living things across our land, rivers, coast, and ocean. You may think of it simply as nature.

Victoria’s natural environment is richly diverse, unique and precious.

How are we implementing Biodiversity 2037?

Find out how Protecting Victoria’s Environment – Biodiversity 2037 is being implemented, what types of activities are happening and how we monitor, evaluate and report on progress.

Explore, connect and protect nature

One of the core goals of Biodiversity 2037 is for all Victorians to value nature and do more to help look after it.

There are many things we can do to help our natural environment stay healthy. Follow the links below to find out more about activities you can get involved in.

Where can I volunteer for nature?

Volunteers play a huge role in helping our natural environment. Check out the Environmental Volunteering portal for an interactive map showing volunteering opportunities across Victoria, connect to environmental volunteering groups and resources and read stories from other volunteers.

How else can I contribute to Biodiversity 2037?

There are many other ways to contribute. Here are some examples:

  1. Visit the Victoria Nature Festival hub to connect with nature and see what you can do to protect Victoria’s natural environment.
  2. Are you involved in a project to improve biodiversity in your area? Contributing information about your activity is an important way to have your contribution included in Biodiversity 2037 progress reports. Find out more about collecting activity data.
  3. Interested in making your garden wildlife friendly, particularly for Victorian plants and animals? Visit Gardens for Wildlife to help you get started.
  4. When you are out and about, take a photo of an interesting plant or animal - using VBA Go. This will upload it directly to the Victorian Biodiversity Atlas which is influential in a range of government investment and management decisions.
