NEW! Visitor Services Representative at 400 Beacon Street, Chestnut Hill

Longyear Museum is now accepting applications for a full-time Visitor Services Representative to serve at the Mary Baker Eddy Historic House at 400 Beacon Street in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. This position is the first point of contact with the public, both in person and over the phone, and oversees the front-desk operations. Strong communication skills and a warm sense of hospitality are key. This position is responsible for scheduling tours, orienting visitors to this historic house, and making sales in the historic house gift shop. The Visitor Services Representative will also be a member of the tour-guiding team. Weekend work required. Prior retail or sales experience is a plus. Membership in The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, is required. Christian Science class instruction is preferred.

NEW! Guides, Mary Baker Eddy Historic House, 400 Beacon Street, Chestnut Hill (part-time)

Longyear Museum is hiring tour guides to share Mrs. Eddy’s story with visitors to her final residence at 400 Beacon Street, Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. Guides should have an interest in Mary Baker Eddy and the early history of Christian Science. They will be expected to attend all training sessions provided by Longyear. This role will conduct tours and assist with daily operations at the historic house. Other duties include supporting the Visitor Services department in the gift shop, light cleaning, and helping to open and close the house. Guides should have strong interpersonal and communication skills and enjoy meeting new people and interacting with a diverse audience. Availability to work some weekends and a flexible schedule is a plus. Membership in The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, is required.

Deputy Director

As Longyear Museum expands its activities and outreach with the reopening of Mrs. Eddy’s final home, 400 Beacon Street, in May 2024, we are also expanding our senior leadership team. We are seeking a Deputy Director who will help to oversee daily operations at the Museum and all eight of the Mary Baker Eddy Historic Houses. This individual will manage the facilities, finance and accounting, technology, visitor services, and collections departments. The Deputy Director will also help to ensure that Longyear is managed according to current best practices for museums, adhering to laws and regulations, and will work closely with the Executive Director. This position is full-time, based at Longyear Museum, in Chestnut Hill, Mass., with minimal travel. It includes some evening and weekend work. Membership in The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Christian Science class instruction are required.

NEW! Facilities and Restoration Specialist

Longyear Museum is now accepting applications for a full-time Facilities and Restoration Specialist. This position is based out of the Museum offices in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, but will work primarily at the Mary Baker Eddy Historic Houses (Massachusetts and New Hampshire). The ideal candidate will be experienced in carpentry, drywall, plumbing, painting, landscaping, and general maintenance. The Facilities and Restoration Specialist must be detail oriented, dependable, and sensitive to a historic preservation approach to projects. This individual should be able to multi-task, be a team player, and have good communication skills. Membership in The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Christian Science class instruction are preferred.

NEW! Finance and Business Assistant

The Finance and Business Assistant is a full-time role based ​at the Museum in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, and plays an integral role in supporting a range of activities within the Finance Department, and the Museum store.  The position is responsible for recording and reconciling income, store revenue, and donations with bank records and other financial databases and assisting with controls for store inventory.  Other activities include corporate legal filings, reports and controls for disbursement activities, and work at the front desk.  The ideal candidate will have an aptitude for dealing with numbers, learning financial systems, and attention to detail, as well as the ability to work with a range of colleagues. A college degree in a financial specialty or equivalent work experience in a financial or office manager role is preferred. Membership in The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Christian Science class instruction are preferred.

Director of Development

Longyear seeks a full-time Director of Development. This position is responsible for overseeing the Development Department and managing its personnel. The Director of Development works closely with the Executive Director/President, as well as the Chief Financial Officer, to meet the financial goals and annual and capital budgets of the organization through established and new connections. The Development Director is based at the Museum in Chestnut Hill, with frequent travel required, including evening and weekend work. He or she attends and presents at group events around the country, as well as small and one-on-one meetings. Familiarity with donor databases and prior public-speaking experience is required. This position is a member of the Museum management team. Membership in The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Christian Science class instruction are required.

Mary Baker Eddy Historic House Site Manager

Concord, N.H.

A full-time, live-in Historic House Site Manager is needed for the care and maintenance of the Mary Baker Eddy Historic House located in Concord, New Hampshire. Job responsibilities include giving tours, cleaning, gardening, and light maintenance at the house. The Historic House Site Manager is also the main point of contact for Longyear in Concord. Weekend work is required during the historic house season. Membership in The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Christian Science class instruction are required.

Mary Baker Eddy Historic House Site Manager

Rumney and North Groton, N.H.

A full-time Historic House Site Manager is needed for the care and maintenance of the Mary Baker Eddy Historic Houses located in North Groton and Rumney, New Hampshire. The Historic House Site Manager lives in the Rumney house, while also caring for the North Groton property. Job responsibilities include giving tours, cleaning, gardening, and light maintenance at both properties. The Historic House Site Manager is also the main point of contact for Longyear in these two communities. Weekend work is required during the historic house season. Membership in The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Christian Science class instruction are required.

Seasonal Guides

On-call and part-time seasonal guides are needed for all eight of Longyear Museum’s Mary Baker Eddy Historic Houses in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Guides will conduct tours and assist with daily Historic House operations including tour admission, house museum shop, bookkeeping, light cleaning, and opening and closing the historic house. Applicants should have an interest in the life and work of Mary Baker Eddy as the Discoverer, Founder, and Leader of Christian Science. Strong communication skills and basic computer skills are a must. Availability to work some weekends and a flexible schedule is a plus. Membership in The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, is required.

Internships at Longyear

Longyear Museum offers a paid summer internship program for college students. The program typically lasts six to eight weeks. Opportunities exist in many of the Museum’s departments, which include: Collections, Communications, Research, Development, Historic Houses and Education, Facilities, Finance, and Visitor Services. Interns gain valuable on-the-job work experience while learning more about the life and work of Mary Baker Eddy through interaction with Longyear’s collection and programs.
