    RESPONSABILY YOURS   A curation of sustainable initiatives FUTURE SOCIETY: PAST FORWARD Concept Future Society has taken a revolutionary approach that taps the art of perfumery and bioscience to reveal nature’s past as part of its mission to preserve biodiversity. In details Their creative process combines synthetic biology and olfactory know-how: using DNA sequencing, biologists identified the genes of fragrance-producing molecules from samples of extinct flowers. These genes were then inserted into yeast and cultured through fermentation. Finally, perfumers used these molecules to formulate fragrances. Each Future Society fragrance offers a deeply sensorial and emotional experience and is seen as the olfactory translation of a key biological mechanism. For example, Solar Canopy resuscitates the Hibiscadelphus wilderianus, which disappeared in Hawaii in 1912, to embody the essence of kinetic energy.     RESPONSABILY YOURS A curation of sustainable activities ROKU BY Camper Concept A fully modular, recyclable, reparable and customizable shoe. In details As individuals are embracing a new sense of responsibility, they are looking for objects they can really feel attached too and create a bond with. Poetry, fantasy, and playfulness renew the very idea of know-how to reconcile craftsmanship and industrial process. A way to assert that flesh and blood “makers” are what give those objects a soul. A particularly interesting example of this desire to make crafted object regain their symbolic power is “ROKU” a recyclable and repairable shoe by Camper, enabling people to unleash their imagination. After creating their own Roku online from a variety of options, the pair is delivered as a kit for the customer to assemble. Should they need to mend the shoes or change their look: no need to buy a new pair, they can just order the missing piece. Last but not least, the fabrication process is less polluting as the shoes are assembled by (one’s own) hand.     MASTERMIND Creative people who inspire us SARAH BURNS: THE ART OF CRAFT American artist and designer Sarah Burns is working in the fields of furniture, interiors and jewelry, mixing crafts with sensibility and sensitivity. “I like art and historical design, [but] I’m also inspired by the more understated qualities of vernacular furniture and architecture […], Sarah Burns explained to Sight Unseen a couple of years ago. The furniture I design isn’t meant to be broadly impressive, but to function specifically and earnestly. It often ends up blending in with its surroundings, intentionally, and hopefully there’s a gesture or two in each piece that elicits something more emotional.” The artist likes to use traditional materials (wool, glass, birch, steel or cotton…) in unlikely complement, in order to make her pieces evocative of the warmth of memory, thus making function and narrative work as one.     RESPONSABILY YOURS   A curation of sustainable initiatives BIOBLACK TX BY NATURE COATINGS Concept A 100% biosourced black pigment made from wood waste. Carbon-negative, it retains more CO2 than it emits, thus counteracting greenhouse gas emissions (based on a preliminary life-cycle analysis). In details Nature Coatings, an American biochemicals company, uses waste materials to create safe, renewable, biosourced fabrics. BioBlack TX was created to replace petroleum-derived carbon black for all silkscreened and rotary printing uses, denim, leather or non-leather coatings, patinas, packagings, pigment dyes, etc. Made 100% from pre-consumer industrial wood waste (FSC®-certified forests), it is traceable throughout the entire supply chain and no chemicals are added during the manufacturing process. It also has the top lightfast index (8/8) which means that it will neither fade nor change color. Produced in a closed circuit, its only by-product is steam, that is then captured and used to power certain parts of the production process. Hence the importance of local brands in the market, but also the strategies of international groups that rely on launching or acquiring Indian beauty brands.
