On my last night at the 2025 Verbier Festival, I got to witness a particularly memorable performance by legendary duo, pianist Martha Argerich and cellist Mischa Maisky — both of whom I was seeing in concert for the first time — as they came together to celebrate 50 years of musical friendship.
The concert reminded me of another one starring the same two icons that was streamed live from Verbier over 15 years ago and featured the intense and passionate work that is Grieg’s Cello Sonata in A Minor. From the very first notes, the chemistry between the musicians is palpable. Maisky expertly alternates between tension and tenderness, while Argerich imbues each phrase with fluid and expressive energy.
This duo truly never gets old. In 2008 as in 2025, the two musicians perform with grace, true to themselves, yet constantly evolving.
