Some of the region’s finest food producers will be coming together on March 19 for a one-day market in the cloisters of Durham Cathedral ahead of celebrations in and around the city marking St Cuthbert’s Day.

Food and drink producers from across the North East will be displaying a wide range of local produce in the cloisters’ atmospheric surroundings, including home-made cheese, fish, meat, cakes, breads, traditional sweets, game and poultry, sausages and craft beers.

Alongside the market, there are a number of events being staged to celebrate the life of St Cuthbert – whose feast day falls on March 20 and who was the most important medieval saint of North East England.

The Northumbrian Association will lead its annual St Cuthbert’s Day Walk, from St Mary’s and St Cuthbert’s Church in Chester-le-Street to Durham Cathedral, via Durham Market Place at approximately 1.30pm.

Visitors to Durham Cathedral will be able to enjoy free tours, stonemasonry demonstrations and a special bell peal.

The day’s events will culminate in a celebratory Festal Evensong at 5.15pm.

Colin Wilkes, managing director of Durham Markets, says: “Durham’s first markets were on Palace Green so it is appropriate that they are returning to the cathedral setting, their birthplace, for this one off event.

“With the walk, and the range of events in the cathedral, St Cuthbert’s Day will be a great celebration and definitely a day to come into Durham city centre.”

The Regional Producers’ Market is

free to attend and will be open from 10am until 4pm.
