Co-op tex festive sale begins
Nagapattinam: As handlooms and textiles minister OS Manian inaugurated the Diwali special sale in Co-optex showroom in Nagappattinam here on Thursday, officials said that the demand for organic sarees is on rise this year.
While addressing the reporters after inaugurating sale here on Thursday, minister OS Manian said hundreds of silk sarees varieties from Kancheepuram, Salem, Coimbatore have been stocked at all the Co-optex showrooms across the state, he said.

“A target of Rs 15 crore has been fixed for Diwali sales at the co-op tex showrooms in Cuddalore region which also includes the Nagapattinam district. We had achieved a sale of Rs 12 crore during the last festival season. While Nagapattinam district had fixed Rs 1.03 crore as sales target during the last festival season, this year it is Rs 1.50 crore”, minister OS Manian stated.
In order to recognize the weaver’s hard work and to win consumer's confidence, each and every silk sarees has a tag attached bearing the details of the cooperative society, particular weaver's name, his age, address of the society or the weaver, how many hours he took to weave the saree etc. This initiative would bring confidence to buy a saree, the minister said.
Meanwhile, officials said that demand for organic sarees is on the rise in the recent years among the public. Organic sarees are made of pure cotton grown on fields without insecticides. Colours used in the sarees are also made of insecticide-free plants and flowers, regional manager of Co-optex, Cuddalore V Gunasekaran told TOI.
“There is a good reception for these organic sarees among the women, as these sarees are light weight and are also in pastel shades", Gunasekaran said.
