Cyclists reminded to stay safe and visible when using the roads

Cyclists and motorists are being urged to ensure their lights are working, especially during the darker mornings and evenings.

The reminder comes after an increasing number of road users have been seen without the correct safety measures when using a shared road space.

Councillor Daren Hale, portfolio holder for regeneration and economic investment, said: “We want cyclists and motorists to be able to co-exist, enjoy and access our city together.

“As cyclists can be considered as vulnerable road users, we are also reiterating the advice that they should remain visible at all times, especially as we experience darker mornings and evenings.”

The Be Bright, Be Seen campaign was launched by Think to encourage cyclists to remain as visible as possible when using the roads.

Advice for cyclists includes wearing coloured, fluorescent or reflective clothing, use well-lit cycle routes and ensure your lights are fully operational. Lights should be white at the front and red at the back.

Motorists are also reminded to ensure that their front and back lights are working, and to continually check mirrors when making any adjustments on the road.

Councillor Hale continued: “It’s important for everyone to ensure that they can be seen at all times, and drivers need to be aware that it is much more difficult to see pedestrians and other vulnerable road users when it’s dark.”

Safer Roads Humber, the regional road safety partnership will also be actively distributing cycle lights in the coming weeks. To find out more information, visit Safer Roads Humber.
