Diagnosing Women with Autism

Posted on: Mon 11 Sep 2017

For many years, it’s been notoriously difficult to diagnose women on the autism spectrum.

“There’s not many behaviours that are seen… girls on the spectrum understand non-verbal communication much better” said Autism Education Specialist Katrina Trist.

A new set of national guidelines, which have been developed by a team of autism specialists, could change this for the better. Promising to provide consistency across the nation and to use multiple assessments for diagnosis, these guidelines could improve the welfare of those on the spectrum and their families.

Autism Education Specialist Katrina Trist spoke with Jennie Lenman about these new guidelines and how autism can differ between men and women.
