Freda “Joyce” Bond was a caring mother, grandmother, and friend, who gave love, acceptance, and hugs to everyone she met. She left this world suddenly on December 1, 2021 at age 89 with her family by her side.

Joyce was born to Charles and Angela Pope in Stones Cove, Newfoundland where she fell in love with her future husband, Albert. They made a loving home in the North End of Halifax where they spent 41 years together before Albert passed suddenly in 1993. Their home became the heart of their family and friends, to which everyone had a key. Together, they had four children: Keith (Jo Anne), Sharon (Elaine), Derek (Denise), and Darlene. She was the proud grandmother of Susie, Ben (Mandee), Dash (Penny), Danielle (Alex), Danica, Dunnery, and Zack (Jamie), and loving great grandmother to Dawson, Brooklyn, Liam, Carson, Kayden, London, Zaxy, Declan, Harper, Zeya, and baby Keira on the way. Never missing a single event of theirs, and always bringing her love and support. She was predeceased by her sister Winnie and leaves behind her beloved brother Newman (Joan), special cousins Vera, Frank, Cathy, Harvey, Roy, Wayne, and brother-in-law Tom (Carol). Joyce has a large extended family, and friends from all walks of life, all of whom will miss her dearly.

Joyce spent 30+ years as a volunteer with Northwood’s Leisure and Recreation and was recognized for her contribution and presented with Northwood’s Loving Care Award in 2017, a Volunteer Service Award from HRM in 2013, and spent 60 years as a member and volunteer at St. Margaret’s of Scotland Church. She worked at Shirley K Maternity, where for many years she was a dedicated employee who loved her job and made many lifelong friends. Her kindness and amazing hugs will forever be remembered.

Joyce never hesitated to offer support to anyone, whether it be a stranger in need of a hug at the grocery store or convincing her daughter to pick up a young person waiting for the bus in the rain. She was an amazing woman who gave an open, loving, and compassionate heart to her family, friends, and everyone she met.

A service will be held on December 18, 2021 at 2pm at St. Margaret’s of Scotland Church. Proof of vaccination, ID, and masks are required. The service will also be live streamed to allow Joyce’s many family and friends to participate virtually. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Northwood Foundation (via website or 902-454-3069).
