Residents say Saskatchewan isn't named after sasquatches

Thursday, February 11, 2016, 3:19 PM - Residents of Saskatchewan would like the public to know their province did not earn its name due to an abundance of the infamous Sasquatch.
This public service announcement comes on the heels of a Fox Sports broadcaster making the Saskatchewan-Sasquatch connection in reference to Utah Jazz forward Try Lyles, who is the first NBA player from the province.
“That region’s known for being home to a lot of sasquatches. That's what it's named after," the announcer said.
Sasquatch expert Chris Rutkowski disagrees, telling CTV News that "sasquatch or Bigfoot are mostly associated with the Pacific Northwest."
Still, the announcer's statement sparked plenty of conversation on Twitter:
It's totally OK if the U.S. thinks #Saskatchewan was named after a #Sasquatch. After all, #America was named after Erica. #saskwatchewan

To be fair, I attempted to type Sasquatch and it got autocorrected to Saskatchewan. #SaskatchewanThings @SkinWade

In reality, the name "Saskatchewan" has nothing to do with sasquatches. Rather, it comes from a Cree word meaning "swift flowing river."
