Scientists in a range of Earth science fields convene this week to cultivate potential uses of scientific data by end users. Several NCEI scientists will attend this biannual meeting hosted by the Federation of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) themed “Strengthening Ties between Observations and User Communities.”
Attendees at the conference January 11–13 in Bethesda, Maryland, include ESIP members with backgrounds in Earth science data and information technology, researchers, science educators, and many doing related work in the public and private sectors. This marks the 11th year of biannual meetings.
A number of presentations focus on practical applications of data for policy development, informed leadership, and decision-making. More specifically, sessions include topics regarding disaster-response scenarios and climate resiliency on the community level. Attracting approximately 300 attendees, the conference schedule includes plenary sessions, breakout presentations, panel discussions, technical workshops, and posters.
The meeting’s lineup reinforces ESIP’s 2015–2020 strategic plan to make Earth science data more discoverable, accessible, and useful to researchers, policy makers, and the public. The Federation’s overarching goal continues to be providing knowledge that is responsive to societal needs.
ESIP is a nonprofit, volunteer organization and an independent forum for addressing Earth science issues and assisting the missions of its agency partners.
