What to Consider When Choosing Interior Doors

What to Consider When Choosing Interior Doors

Everyone talks a lot about the appeal of exterior doors, but the interior doors in your home can make just as much of a statement. The doors you choose for your closets, bedrooms, and other entrances within the home can make or break the whole look and style. They’re not often noticed, just like trim or molding, but you can make a dramatic effect on any room when you put careful thought into your interior doors. Whether you’re in the process of remodeling, constructing a new home or just want an updated decor change, we have the styles, materials and more to consider when looking at interior doors.

Style

You can get as ornate or simple as you want here. You can even choose different doors for different areas of your home in order to best complement the decor. Mixing and matching is a great way to add character, although you’ll want to keep some elements the same so that there’s a sense of flow throughout the house, says Houzz. A major thing to consider when choosing style is the overall size and feel of each room. Don’t go too big on doors for a small room; likewise, large rooms deserve a grand entrance.

Swing

Right hand or left hand, inward or outward? Yes, you can absolutely determine which way you want your door to swing. When ordering a custom door, be sure to specify these parameters so the manufacturers knows where to place the hinges and handles. Keep this in mind: the side of the door that the handle appears will tell you if it’s a right hand or left hand door.

Framing

A good framing job will enhance the look of your door, and likewise, a bad framing job will detract from it. You can spend all the money in the world on your door, but if you use cheap framing materials or construction short cuts, you may damage the door and end up shelling out more money later. Plus, you don’t want to detract from the beauty of an expensive door. In general, you can purchase doors pre-hung (mounted in frames with hinges attached to doorjamb) or as slabs (you need to install hinges and a frame to ensure proper installation).

Types

There are lots of door types to choose from. Many are classic while others are trendy. Barn doors, for instance, are all the rage right now for their rustic appearance. Consider practicality first, then the amount of room you have. The different types include:
  • Sliding: Usually constructed of wood, glass or even mirrors, sliding doors are perfect for closets because they take up minimal extra space.
  • Pocket: These slide right into the wall instead of alongside it, as sliding doors do. These are even better at saving space.
  • Folding: Most common are bi-fold doors, which fold in on either side. They’re ideal for closets, laundry rooms, and pantries because they can accent small spaces.
  • Panel: These are what you’ll see most often in typical American homes, made up of square panels crafted in wood.
  • French: Featuring transparent panels of glass, these let in a lot of natural light.
  • Dutch: One half opens on top, while the other on bottom stays closed, or vice versa.
  • Blind: These are “secret doors” that blend in with the wall thanks to no visible handles, hinges or trim.
