Best 2016 Leap Year Specials: Celebrate February 29 With Discounts On Food, Travel

February 29 comes but once every four years, so why not celebrate with some food, retail therapy and maybe even a night in a hotel?

Whether you’re a leapling -- a person born on February 29 -- or a regular schmo who has a standard, once-a-year birthday, many U.S. companies are offering special deals to mark the leap year.

Below, we’ve listed a few discounts and offers to get you started, but check local listings to see if there are more deals available in your area.

If February 29 is your birthday, a whole lot of free food might be in your future.

On Monday, Pizza Hut will dish out a free one-topping Personal Pan Pizza to carryout customers with IDs showing they were born on leap day.

“Pizza Hut has been the site of many, many birthday parties through the years, and since leaplings only get to celebrate their true birthdays every four years, we wanted to make their day special and help them honor their birthdays in a big way,” Pizza Hut spokesman Doug Terfehr said in a statement.

Leaplings dining at Hard Rock Cafe will be treated to a free entree from a special menu on Monday.

McAlister’s Deli, based in Atlanta, Ga., will hand out free cookies to people born on Feb. 29.

The New Jersey-based Villa Italian Kitchen will give away free slices of pizza to leap day babies.

Not born on Feb. 29? There's still plenty of leap day specials you can enjoy.

On Monday, Arby’s will offer a special vegetarian menu -- available for just one day.

Tacos Tu Madre, a taqueria in Los Angeles, will offer its Asada Tacos for 29 cents on leap day.

Hungry Howie’s, a 549-unit pizza chain based in Michigan, will sell a large, one-topping pizza for 29 cents with the purchase of a regular-priced large pizza.

And if you buy a dozen donuts at Krispy Kreme on Monday, you can get a dozen original glazed donuts for $2.29.

Several retailers, including Foot Locker, Lids, Aeropostale, Lane Bryant, Land’s End and Urban Outfitters will offer deals in celebration of the leap year.

On Feb. 29, Big Frog Custom T-Shirt & More will give free leap year 2016 T-shirts (no purchase required) at participating outlets. The retailer is also offering 29 percent off any order placed on or before leap day.

Hotels and travel companies are also boasting promotions on or around Feb. 29.

Destination Hotels will give a 29 percent (or more) discount off room rates at the group's hotels, which include locations in San Francisco and New Orleans, for reservations made on leap day.

Expedia is providing a 29 percent discount at select properties worldwide. You just have to make a hotel reservation with the Expedia app on or before Feb. 29.

Travelocity
will provide up to 30 percent off hotels in honor of leap day.

You can use the code GETAWAYS30 to save $30 off flight tickets booked on CheapOair on or before Monday.

Guests at Salamander Hotels & Resorts can get 29 percent off normal hotel room rates if they make room reservations on Feb. 29. Salamander has properties in Florida and Virginia.

Westin Fort Lauderdale is giving 29 percent off room rates for stays on Feb. 29. The hotel will also have $2.29 cocktails on sale that day.

New York City's Refinery Hotel will offer $2.29 cocktails on leap day. The property will also have rooms for $229 on Feb. 29 with in-room breakfast.

Some hotels, including the Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston and Melrose Georgetown Hotel in Washington, D.C., are selling special birthday packages for leaplings.
